A few nights ago I attended my first Syrian metal show, something which I'm sure very few of my non-Arab friends even realize exist. I thought taking some photos and making known the Syrian metal scene would be a good opportunity to reveal that side of the Middle East that is rarely, if ever, displayed in Western media ( Read more... )

You had me at "Syrian metal."

I've really enjoyed seeing your photos, precisely because they show the side of Syria that isn't in the news. I'm looking forward to the site!

Well said.

It's the whole "war zone" thing. If you're a young hip traveler you have to be able to tell your friends about how you brave you are and how you played with death in Tyre.

I'm noticing more and more that metal music seems to be really "in" in Lebanon and Syria. No idea what that's supposed to say but yeah.

I, too, have never heard of a Syrian metal scene. I'm not surprised that it's Armenians who are spearheading the movement...maybe that's because I keep thinking of System of a Down haha. I'm glad you're writing about things that nobody would ever hear of, otherwise, because to be honest, the Syria I know is the one in t.v. shows which make me glad I don't live there. Do you watch any of the t.v. shows, and if so, do you think it reflects Syrian society accurately? Or is there a bit of a disconnect like with most t.v. shows and real societies... although I can think of some shows that are quite demonstrative of American culture. Anyhow, I'm rambling, glad to see you posting again! :-D

i'd hardly say that it is 'spearheaded' by armenians... this particular band happened to be armenian, but i'm certain that most of them are arab.
