Romance vs. Academics
Her name is Gwyneth, and she is a freshman at the University of Portland. She is undecided about her major, though is considering becoming an English teacher. She is a spunky 19 year old who is crazy about her friends, family, and life in general. She came into college single, and like most girls, was in hopes of finding a guy who would give her that warm and fuzzy feeling. Like nearly all girls her age, Gwyneth has pondered about what the perfect guy would consist of. She has always thought about it, but never dreamed that now would be the time her fantasies would become reality.
Gwyneth had found a boy that had her going crazy for him. She could not stop talking about him! His name is Chris, and he is a sophomore at UP, currently residing in Villa. One of the first things she happened to mention about him was the fact that he does not succumb to societal trends. “He does not have a myspace, he will not text message people, and he does not have AIM,” said Gwyneth. Most people would ask “what’s wrong with this guy,” but instead Gwyneth asks “where has he been all my life?” There is something about the guy who refuses to wear jeans, and chooses glasses over contacts that has Gwyneth’s heart pounding for him.
I had Theology last semester with Gwyneth, and whenever we would have a few minutes to talk during class, it would usually be about our plans for the weekend, music, movies, or just about how much work we had to do that week. These would be typical conversations we would always have whenever we saw each other around campus as well. A few weeks into this semester however, it got to the point that whenever I would see Gwyneth, all she would talk about was Chris. In one of these instances, Gwyneth and I had just gotten done eating at Red Robin, and she was nice enough to walk me to my class that afternoon in Franz. We were talking about how great lunch was, when all of a sudden, she sees Chris in the hall, walking to his next class. She literally stops walking and talking, and just stares at him, watching him as he strolls off. All she can say is “I love him!” It’s as if every instance she sees him, she disregards everything and everyone around her. These moments however, were certainly not confined to the hall.
She would tell me about their late night conversations in the dorms, meals that they would eat together, and their inside joke that they would get married someday. She would always refer to Chris as her husband, and would tell me that they were going to adopt children. I had never seen Gwyneth like this before. She was really scaring me, because it seemed like her infatuation with Chris was consuming her life, and she completely disregarded her academics.
Gwyneth could not help relating random bits of her daily life to Chris. Often times she would be reading her Economic book, and would think of him because of his strong interest in that subject. One night, she was doing some homework online, and she wandered over to facebook, and ended up spending about twenty minutes on his page alone. Little moments like this were begin to worry me. But then I realized that this was a typical situation of a girl who was enraptured by romance. Valentine’s Day seemed like the perfect day for this wonderful lady to profess her affection for Chris, but her secret will have never been revealed to him yet.
Chris had made Valentine’s Day cards for Gwyneth as well as a couple other girls in her dorm, and so she found it only respectful to make him one back. They were in the commons the next day having lunch. She looks forward to her commons visits, (which is unusual considering the food they serve), only because Chris is always there. “I scan for him every time I’m in the commons, no joke.” That day Chris was having trouble finding his ID card. He eventually found it in his inside pocket, where his valentine from her was. Gwyneth happened to take notice of that and said “good, that’s where it belongs,” (because it was close to his heart.) As Gwyneth and I departed for class after that lunch, all she could say was “I’m on cloud nine.”
In many ways, Gwyneth embodies the characteristics of a young freshman girl who is mesmerized by romance that she often fails to attend to her academics. The daily connections she makes to Chris either through her textbooks, or through technology, is always there. He is a distraction even when he is not around. Who knows, maybe Gwyneth is sacrificing something now, because she knows it will be worth it in the future, a life lived happily ever after with Chris.
