Actually, regarding the mental-space-inside-a-physical-space, I know exactly what you're talking about. It happens to me more often with other-things-connected-with-other-modes-of-perception - for instance, it's often triggered by music or scents - but I'm pretty sure it's relatively common, if not completely normal.
