Do you have any concerns about riding again? This is the sort of story that makes me wonder if the joy would be worth the risk for me. The thing is that no matter how good you are on a bike, when crap happens, you're pretty exposed. And Mac wants to get a motorcycle if his health ever recovers enough to have sufficient funds.
Just wondering... VERY glad you and Gus survived in decent shape.
Oh, I absolutely am looking forward to riding again.
It's true that I was a little nervous on some of the steeper bits as we drove back to Gus's house. However, I'm sure that feeling will fade in time and with good experiences.
I feel safer in the helmet and armored jacket on the motorcycle than I feel on a bicycle, all exposed. I know I would have had it much worse had I been wearing only a T-shirt.
In my mind, the comparison, bicycle to motorcycle, is interesting. I took a fall on my bicycle about 8 years ago. I was going less than 10 mph when I stuck my front tire in a small void next to a set of condemned railroad tracks that were mostly covered by asphalt.
The result was several broken ribs, a badly screwed up shoulder and collarbone (several months of physical therapy ensued) and heavy abrasions (road rash) to my knees, thigh, arm and shoulder. The abrasion injuries would have been close to zero had I been wearing my motorcycle gear, and I can only guess how much less the impact injuries would have been had I been wearing my padded and armored motorcycle gear.
When I went in to have my shoulder x-rayed, the techs filled me up with stories of serious bicycle injuries they had seen. Those things are dangerous. I don't understand why we let kids ride them. I have not been a regular bicyclist since.
