I just had a great conversation with my teenage daughter about a choice she made that her dad and I found hard to accept. Yes, there were some tears, but with patience and a willingness to really listen to her and apologize where necessary on my part, her feelings were resolved and the choice was rescinded with reasonableness all around. Good guess, but not this time. Jackie had taken it upon herself to add a second piercing to her left earlobe, without consulting either me or her dad. Needless to say, we were startled.

Just wait 'til Sonja develops not just a mind of her own, but also the means to sneak things in while your back is turned!

I knew the kid had a good head on her shoulders. Second piercing is waaaay less permanent than where that discussion could have gone. "We've decided we're in love, and we're going to get married before college." (or variants on that.)
