I just got a threatening phone call at work, warning me to stay away from a friend of mine.
I don't know how I'm supposed to react to this..........

I wouldn't worry about this. Mostly everybody these days says a whole lot, but doesn't act on a syllable. I doubt you're in harm's way.

But, can I hypothesize?

The caller was female, yes? I can't see a male threatening you, or any other woman for that matter. Well, I can see it, but I wouldn't expect it. If it's a male that called you, I wouldn't be worried. It's likely an empty threat. A male in a small city like this wouldn't have the balls to physically hurt a female, unless they didn't care at all about what people thought of them. They'd also have to be completely fearless since any attack on you wouldn't go over well with your friends and acquaintances. It would be far too easy for you to identify your potential attacker and get the word out
