On sat night I decided to be productive around the house. I dismantled the bizarre shelf/closet thing in my bedroom. In the process I cracked plaster in a at least half a dozen places and managed to wallop myself in the chin with a hammer. I have one hell of a funky looking bruise

You could do anything you wanted with your life, you just have to decide what it is you want. That's the part that's rough.
Oh, and if it's any consolation, having an academic related goal doesn't mean one knows what onw wants to do with one's life. School's all I know, that's why I'm here. I'm good at it. On the bright side, you have a lot of practical skills, skills I haven't picked up during the course of my university education. There has to be more than one way you can use the skills you have learned in retail. You're intelligent and charming and you know a thing or two about a thing or two. You'll be ok... things are just hard right now so it's hard to see that.

Look at me. Seven long years of post-secondary education and what do I get out of the deal? Laid off from an office job, that wasn't even related to my field, only to end up working temporary part time stocking shelves in a retail store at minimum wage. Woo hoo.
At least you have those skills. Maybe they're not being applied in the right way, the right time or even the right place, but you've got them. You've got that experience that you *can* use anywhere.
I can't give you any advice, and I don't know how insightful that is, but you've got my support, should you need it. And if you should need another movie night in the future, I'm there! :-)
