a couple of weeks ago we had a dinosaur-themed potluck because we were going to watch The Land Before Time but for some reason everyone was too tired/busy to dedicate 90 minutes to this activity, so it just wound up being an "eat tree-star shaped cucumber salad and volcano-shaped mashed potatoes" party

It sounds like you're having a really awesome summer, though, of which I am kinda envious, but mostly happy for you. :)
Your story reminds me of a recent happening at a dance. There was a two-step on and I was talking to a guy who doesn't like the two-step, but it was a pretty melody and I was swaying to it, so he poked fun at me by swaying very obviously and making faces, and I teased back that it was like a middle school dance. A fellow nearby overheard and dared us to go on the floor and middle school dance, so we did. And then some gal came over and yelled, "Too close, too close!" (When we were a good almost outstretched armlength apart). Hahahaha. ^_^

This was ballroom dancing. People make middle school dance jokes (teeter-tottering back and forth) not uncommonly...
