When I first started reading this post, I thought it was an ode to my favorite website (besides my own), Snopes. They have a huge collection of urban legends and E-mail forwards, as well as carefully-researched explanations of each one and whether it's true or false, if they can conclusively determine that. I send the link to anyone who forwards me a warning like the ones you described and post it as a comment to any Livejournal entry with an urban legend in it. It's a good read even if you haven't fallen for any of the random stories you've heard, and whenever I hear a crazy claim, I go to Snopes first. You might be surprised... some of the things you hear are actually true.
