Character: Sheik (Princess Zelda)
Series: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Version: Video game, just before the Shadow Temple
Age: 17
Gender: Female, but feel free to mistake her for a dude.
Sexuality: straight

Appearance:
Sheik looks and sounds like a boy (if a vaguely androgynous one), which is the effect she's going for. She has short blond hair with long bangs that obscure one of her red eyes, and heavily tanned skin. She wears the tight-fitting blue bodysuit traditional of the Sheikah people, under a short, frayed tabard emblazoned with a red Eye of Truth. Her face is nearly always hidden by a high collar, and her head, forearms, fingers, and chest are tightly wrapped with bandages - although only the last ones are actually for binding anything. On the back of her right hand is the mark of the Triforce, but she’ll go to great pains to keep it hidden.

Personality:
Quiet and mysterious, mostly. Her words are always carefully chosen (if cryptic) and her expression tightly controlled, and she tends to appear and disappear without warning. Seven years of constant pursuit have made her cautious and sometimes distrustful of others, since any crack in her disguise could spell even greater disaster for herself and her people.

Still, there's only so much she can hide her true nature. She's very much on the side of good, of course, and will go to any lengths to protect her kingdom and her people, no matter the cost to herself. As the bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom, she's wise and insightful beyond her years, but she also carries a heavy burden of guilt, blaming herself for everything that's happened to Hyrule because of her naïve decisions. Making up for her mistakes is her top priority, but she’ll still help unrelated people in need when she can, even if they never find out why.

Abilities/Weaponry/Strengths:
Even as a child, Princess Zelda was able to wield abnormally powerful magic, much of it light-based. She even had prophetic dreams from time to time. However, she's voluntarily sealed most of her power away in order to conceal herself from Ganondorf. Although she could break the seal at any time, doing so would probably bring down the full force of the Thief King's armies on her, so she's unwilling to do it even as a last resort. Now she only has a token amount of her former magic at her disposal, mostly as the ability to teleport over short distances.

To make up for her lack of magic, she's become a seasoned physical fighter over her years in exile, and has all the skills of a Sheikah. She is graceful, flexible, and exceptionally fast - what she lacks in physical strength, she makes up for in speed. Mainly she fights with her hands and feet, but her inventory also contains at least one long knife, lots of razor-sharp needles for throwing, and a length of barbed chain. She has a lot of skill with bow and arrow, but because it’s kind of unwieldy, she doesn’t carry one around.

She also plays the harp well, and keeps a small one in her inventory. (Don't ask where her inventory is.)

Weaknesses:
Though she doesn't want to admit it, she fears Ganondorf. On her own, she's no match for him and the Triforce of Power, and she recognizes that. Her only hope rests in the Hero of Time, Link, and he's one of only a few people she trusts. On that note, she's a bit slow to trust people in general, and tends to give out information only on a need-to-know basis.

Additionally, what she makes up for in speed, she lacks in physical strength. She's phenomenally fast and highly accurate, but her attacks rarely do more than superficial damage, and she can't absorb a great deal of damage, either. Aware of this, she generally tries to avoid combat, but of course that's not always possible.

History:
Sheik was born Princess Zelda of Hyrule, and brought up in the lap of luxury. She was always very insightful for her age, if a tad mischievous, but that particular streak was usually curbed by her governess and guardian, Impa of the Sheikah. So, for her first ten years, Zelda's life was bright and peaceful. Then came the dream.

She knew it was more than a dream - a vision of dark clouds rising out of the desert and descending on the land, only to be defeated by a light from the forest. And soon, she caught her first glimpse of the dark clouds in the form of the Gerudo King, Ganondorf, who had come ostensibly to meet with her father the King. Worried, Zelda warned the court about her prophetic dream, but only Impa believed her. Powerless to stop him, the princess waited in frustration, secretly plotting the Thief King's downfall.

But she didn't have to wait very long. One day, a boy about her own age, dressed in green and followed by a fairy, snuck into her garden, searching for her. She instantly recognized the boy, Link, as the light from the forest, and conscripted him into her plans. If he could gather the three Spiritual Stones to the Temple of Time, they would be able to open the door to the Sacred Realm and obtain the power of the Triforce before Ganondorf could.

But Ganondorf made his move before Link and Zelda were ready to make theirs. He murdered the King of Hyrule, and would have killed the young princess as well had Impa not helped her escape. They passed by Link as they fled on horseback, and as her last resort, Zelda threw behind them the Ocarina of Time - the last relic that Link would need to open the door to the Sacred Realm. Maybe he could still succeed!

As she soon learned, though, he didn't. Their plan - her plan - backfired completely, allowing Ganondorf free access into the Sacred Realm and the Triforce resting inside. Fortunately, the Triforce was split into its three parts the moment the Thief King tried to seize it. Only the Triforce of Power went to him, while the Triforce of Wisdom went to Zelda, and the Triforce of Courage to Link. Knowing that, Zelda persisted in the hope that all was not lost, even though Hyrule had fallen to darkness and Link was nowhere to be found. He would return, and she would be ready.

Needing to conceal herself from Ganondorf, Zelda magically altered her appearance to look like one of the Sheikah, and took on the name Sheik. Then she sealed nearly all of her magic away, making it inaccessible to herself and, more importantly, undetectable by her enemies. Over the next seven years, Impa taught her all the ways of the Sheikah, and she grew up to be a skilled fighter. The plan worked; Ganondorf never managed to find the princess.

Seven years to the day after Link opened the Sacred Realm, Sheik felt a call to return to the Temple of Time, and surely enough, there he was, now old enough to wield the Master Sword and strike down the evil looming over Hyrule. She offered him her aid, and began teaching him the songs that would bring him quickly to the temples. Now that he had finally returned, time was of the essence. Link didn't fail her expectations of him, and had soon awoken three of the five Sages - those of the forest, fire, and water.

Then, abruptly, he vanished. Sheik had little time to search for him before hearing of an attack on Kakariko Village. She arrived to find the town engulfed in flames, and the dark force that had been sealed in its well in the midst of escaping. Though she did her best to stop it, she was unable to, and was knocked unconscious in the fight. When she came to, she'd been transported somewhere else entirely...
