I think you've made a great point. I think what you're saying pertains not just to missionary work, but to all types of volunteering.

Too often people seem like they do things just to say they've done them. Nothing sounds better than saying "I spent my summer vacation in Africa helping starving children."

Don't get me wrong, props for the people who have the guts to do it, but you're right... instead of paying $2,000 for training and shots and airplane tickets, why not give it directly to the cause?

The answer is... because it makes people feel adventurous to spend summers in Africa or semesters in Mexico.
