Here one can neither stand nor lie nor sit There is not even silence in the mountains But dry sterile thunder without rain --t.s. eliot, 'the waste land'
my last lj entry was a sort of rememberance eulogy for three friends who died many years ago. i remember each of them on that day, and light candles for them.
today i have another.
sonia5 was the creator of hairpolice. a wonderful, cranberry-haired woman i would travel to nyc for 'maintenance' on dreadlocks she had molded my hair into a humid june afternoon almost 5 years ago. the hairpolice crew comes to nyc every 2 months, crashing in someone's apartment or a salon tucked away in the east village with enormous suitcases full of synthetic hair and platform boots. the past five years i've begged rides off friends, bribed coworkers, and borrowed vehicles in order to get to the city every 4 months so i could sit for hours in an uncomfortable hard chair, sonia's fingers pulling my hair, methodically draping string over my fingers and pestering her

Jervais, thank you so much for all your efforts. I wish I could attend the funeral, but can only be there in spirit. Will anyone be organizing memorial gatherings in other cities like LA or NYC?
Also, has there been a charity or organization selected by Sonia's family for donations to be made in her name?
I'm just stunned and aching by this. She was such a fantastic person on every level; I feel so fortunate to have met her and to have been touched and inspired by her.
My sincerest condolences to her family and to the extended family who worked with and loved her, --Mary
