It's called regeneration. Not a defense mechanism, but my kind can cheat death when we're mortally wounded.

[Becomes quite serious now.] Old cells, as you say, rewrite themselves to become new, and we release a lot of artron energy as it happens. Our bodies heal themselves that way. We never know what happens right after it happens so it's a dodgy process. And does feel a lot like dying every time it happens.

Who knows? My genetic material is fairly the same with every incarnation, even if the face is different. Maybe whoever seems to be running things around here hasn't bothered checking that out when they operated on me.
