Satoshi did not suspect for one minute that he would be married. But then his mother introduced him to Mana during one of their vacations in Bali. She was pretty in a traditional Japanese way and yet lived everywhere but Japan. She lived in places full of Arashi fans, but she just wasn't and that was probably what Satoshi liked the most about her. He wasn't entirely sure when they started dating or if they were even dating, but they did eat out together often and sometimes the two of them would watch movies at this apartment or go shopping or just do nothing but enjoy each others company. O yes, and they had sex. No threesomes though. He loved her and for some crazy reason she loved him back. On February 27th, they were officially married under a tree. At 33, he unexpectedly became the first Arashi member to be wed. No matter how much the others asked, Satoshi vowed he would never really tell how he and Mana married. Not for any particular reason other than he is Satoshi and that's what he does.
Satoshi also did not think he would have kids. He is not too fond of children, especially babies (if the various "Care Taker Arashi" and nearly half of the entire Mago Mago Arashi series were clue enough.) That was before Mai. Before he held her in his hands in the hospital for the first time. He couldn't really remember a time when he was happier. Nothing matched up to the beauty of his first child and his precious daughter. Not even that delicious 40 kilo tuna he caught at Atami. Of course he soon regretted it when he had to change her first diaper, but only a little. And soon he even had a son. Someone who would eventually go fishing and drink with him! And then another!
Satoshi was not the only one to feel this happiness (and stress). Aiba married soon after he did. She was three-years older a bit ditzy but Ohno thought they were perfect for each other. Aiba told him once they met a club and spent the night together. From then on he just could not get her off of his mind and there were no pictures in the papers so she must be a nice person. She wasn't too interested at first, but she eventually gave into his earnestness like many do. Five months later they were married and they were so in love that Satoshi could help but love her too. Until the divorce. Satoshi will say that it wasn't really either of their faults and as long as Aiba had no regrets about it, he's fine with it too.
Before Satoshi was "Papa" he was "Uncle Satoshi" to Masaki's Shouichi, the first Arashi baby. But when Shouichi was just six months old, Satoshi was forced to be Uncle Satoshi from Japan while Shouichi moved to America with his mother. While at the supermarket, his mother unfortunately got involved in an accident and Shouichi went back to his father. Soon after Aiba quit their variety shows for a while to care for his young son. Satoshi had never felt prouder of Aiba.
Satoshi loves Sho's wife. She's just so interesting. She is so smart (a university student at Toudai getting her post-graduate degree) and so nice (she volunteers for UNICEF) and really young (again, university student!). And also because Sho was such an embarrassing mess that it was cute. He really needed a lot of prodding on just to get her number, let alone ask her to dinner as "friends." From what Satoshi knows, there was some insecurity on both their parts (which basically translates as ‘they were being really stupid’). For Sho, it was dating someone amazingly wonderful that actually liked him for him. For Narumi, it was dating an idol that might one day leave her for someone much more glamorous. Despite their fears, they got married anyway and for the past six years the two have been trying to have a child. The stress of Narumi's job as a speech therapist has been making their dream extremely difficult, so she quit last May.
Satoshi had to admit that Jun's wife, Youko, made him a little uneasy. Not that he blames her. After all, anyone that can "tame" Matsujun is someone worthy of admiration of some sort. But it really isn't that. Or the fact that she's a bassist of an indie rock band. To be honest, Satoshi is actually really happy that Jun married someone in the entertainment business, if only because she would be the one person that would really be able to understand all the stress and trouble Matsujun has to go through constantly.
Youko made Satoshi uneasy because she actually used to date Nino. In fact, he stills remembers the night he found out.
Arashi had just finished a meeting for a TV appearance and Satoshi invited Nino out to Italian, his treat. The kids were with their mother and grandparents and it had been a while since just the two of them could hang out. Satoshi still considered Nino to be his best friend and liked to think he knew him well. Well enough to realize that when Nino refused a free dinner, something was up.
"You are going out with somebody," Satoshi said plainly. Nino nodded.” With whom?" he continued.
"A girl," answered Nino, moving to leave the room. Nino must have seen Satoshi's crazy grin of "oh my god you're getting married this year too" since he replied, "it's not like that."
"Then what?" Satoshi gestured with his hands what he was thinking just to embarrass Nino. He didn't mean anything by it but that did not stop Nino from hitting him lightly on his head.
“Not that either,” Nino said, shaking his head. “Do you honestly think I’m that shallow?”
Satoshi found out a week later that they "broke up" that night. A couple days after that, he found out that Jun started dating her. Up till now he is unsure whether Jun knows what Youko and Nino were (and could have been) and he isn't planning on telling him. It's none of his business. Besides, now they have a daughter and isn't that testament enough that they are supposed to be together?
Speaking of Nino, Satoshi was (is) seriously worried about him. Satoshi wants nothing more than Nino's happiness. After many years of marriage to an amazing woman and three wonderfully bratty children, Satoshi sincerely wants that happiness for Nino. Nothing, not even fishing for two days straight or completing that painting he's been working on for two summers, match up to the joy of being able to come home to Mai running to greet her Papa at the door, Yuu trailing behind her and Mana trying to cook his favorite curry rice while Kei is bouncing in his high chair. Sure there were times when got tired of reading the exact same bed time story fifty times and even someone with Satoshi's temperament got into arguments with Mana. But everything, every abnormally high fever, projectile vomit, kiss on the forehead, and whispers of "I love you" are worth the whole world and more to Satoshi. And he wants to spread that feeling to his best friend.
Not that he would ever force Nino into doing something he does not want to do. After a little more than two decades with Nino, Satoshi knows when to push and when he oversteps his boundaries. He knows Nino is just not the type to really get serious in a relationship, even with Youko (which till this day, Satoshi thinks Nino regrets just a little.) Feelings are hard for Nino to express and mastered how to mask them. He knows Nino's worried about what might happen and given his family history, Satoshi cannot blame him.
Even so, Satoshi is sure that even if Nino never marries he would still be happy. Happy to sit at home and play video games and listen to music. Happy to go to work and listen to Jun complain how Youko doesn't know how to hang laundry or Sho whine about Narumi working overtime again or Aiba gush over Chika. Happy to remain Uncle Nino and spoil his favorite kids with surprise gifts and piggyback rides.
Just not nearly as happy as Satoshi wants him to be.
One of the times that he noticed Nino's anxiousness was at Aiba's wedding. Aiba's second that is. Aiba remarried an old classmate of his named Chika who managed to not only steal his heart, but Shouichi's and more importantly Aiba's mother’s. The outdoor ceremony was simple and in a beautiful garden with the colors of autumn everywhere. Most of the guests were married couples and their children (and if not, seriously dating or gay). Satoshi could only guess that made Nino feel a little left out, but he knew he would say nothing. He watched Nino sit by his lonesome before returning to his job as babysitter for the night.
"Papa! Come catch me!" his daughter giggled while putting a blindfold made from a napkin over his eyes. He smiled and carefully ran around with the kids, pretending to not know where they were.
"Ohno-kun!" he heard Narumi yell for him. He took off the blindfold and heard the children groan. He promised them some candy later and that made them like him again while he walked over to Sho, Narumi, and Nino who was holding his son, Yuu.
"Here, take your kid," Nino said while putting Yuu into his arms. Five-year-old Mai was behind him, holding onto his belt and pouting.
"Papa, I want to be carried to!" she complained. Narumi took her holds her to Sho's chagrin.
Nino just took one look at her before saying, "Oh, God, you’re pregnant."
"You're pregnant!" Sho said a little loudly, surprising everyone close by.
Satoshi laughed a little, mostly at Sho's reaction but also a little at how wide Nino's eyes were and how flushed Narumi looked. She explained that she was going to tell Sho after her eighth week, but Sho ignored that comment to tell her to put Mai-chan down just in case. She handed over Mai to Nino who was busy congratulating a shell-shocked Sho.
"Congrats," Satoshi whispered to a glowing Narumi. "Yuu-chan. Mai-chan. Go kiss Aunt Narumi." Always happy to, the two kids leaned over and placed sloppy kisses on Narumi's cheek.
Soon Jun came over to investigate Sho's scream and everyone gathered around to congratulate the couple.
"Hurry up and get married!" Satoshi heard Youko say to Nino.
“Easier said than done."
“I’m sure there’s someone out there," Youko reassured.
“Where?" Nino challenged with a small bit of bitter resentment.
To add salt to his wound, Aiba asked for an Arashi family photo. He busied himself arranging the four couples and their children and was too excited to notice Nino's stiffness.
"Shall I just take the picture?" Nino proposed with some sarcasm. They stood stopped their fidgeting for a moment to look at him, trying to carefully choose their words. Satoshi heard some mutterings of "it's fine" and "we don't mind." Maybe even a "poor Nino," but he chose to ignore that one.
"Sit here Nino," Chika said through the mutterings. She patted the area next to her while holding Aiba's squirming six-year-old in her lap.
"Say cheese!" shouted the photographer.
Ohno didn't miss Nino's forced grin or his less than enthusiastic peace sign.
The night of Aiba's birthday and Christmas party, Satoshi was yet again the designated babysitter. He was in the living room with the kids when he heard shrieks of joy coming from the entrance room. Apparently Nino showed up. With a girl.
When Nino came into the room, Satoshi put on his stupid ""oh my god you're getting married this year" grin on again, which Nino chose to ignore for draping himself over the older man to play with the two-year-old in his arms.
"What's her name?" Satoshi asked teasingly.
"Miharu? I think. She just moved into my apartment building. Oh and she's already making nice with your wife. Better watch it."
"She sounds perfect."
Of course he would keep on eye on this new girl. He is Leader after all. Even though his knees hurt when he dances and he has to change diapers. Even if they all get married and have children and go about their own lives. In the end, the five of them together are Arashi and happy and Satoshi will do whatever he can to keep it that way.
