The day of my surgery came faster than I thought. I had only managed to talk to my Haha about what exactly was happening today. She had been very kind and huggy. Which was odd for a little Japanese woman. I expect it from Miyuki, but... I'm still baffled. Which is why I hadn't told John or Tasha about the surgery until the very last moment. I didn't know an easy way to say it.
Especially around Dad. I tried once or twice to ease into it. But I found out his rather dim view of anything happening to somebody's brain. Then we both got distracted by sake and had to be pulled out of the koi pond a time or two.
On the day of the surgery, I woke up dead calm. Something I hadn't had for two weeks. I had moments of quiet relief with Alison, but I couldn't get the fear out. But the calm was there as I slipped out of bed. Wrapped around me as I went downstairs to make a couple calls. I had only planned on one, but Dad had left for work early. So, he should get a message, too.
Luck was with me because even with this calm, I didn't want to have to explain too much about what was happening today. I left messages with both Mom and Dad. Well, Mom and her kissy man Logan. They acted like we didn't notice, but those of us with psychometric powers did. I left a message for Star, too. I'd left lots of messages before, but I think I probably finished filling up his answering machine with this one.
So I left a message that went: "Hi, [Relative]! It's Longshot. I'm having brain surgery today. I know I'm probably being kind of late to tell you, but the doctor probably doesn't want more than Ali hanging around while she fixes what Mojo put in my head. So, uhm, if you want to visit after it's done, you can call Ali or the castle later. Someone'll tell you where to find Dr. Beverly's place. I don't know if I'll be awake or not. So, uhm, have a good day! *click*"
Then Ali and I got ready to go. She might have been nervous, but I wasn't. I couldn't avoid this. I'd whined and dragged my feet about this for two whole weeks! That was a lot of energy wasted. I needed all the energy I could muster. Just to make sure I didn't bolt off the surgery table and moon the doctor as I ran away. I've heard surgery require clothes that bare butts or something.
Dr. Beverly's office looked totally different. Well, the waiting room was the same, but the exam room had changed into a surgery place. All sorts of beeping machines and blinking lights. There was also some guy with a yellow shouldered uniform standing back against the wall. he seemed to be paying more attention to the machines and that they were staying put than Ali or me. Dr. Beverly made her entrance and handed Alison a gown to change into. I got one, too! Though there was no butt-baring. I think I had been misinformed.
There was a nurse there. She had a Japanese last name. I was going to ask about it, but they said I had to get ready to go sleep. Which is silly when I woke up less than four hours ago. But I hopped up on the table and tried to snuggle in. Which was hard. Those things weren't made to be completely comfy. It didn't matter much when I felt Alison hold my hand.
The nurse told me to count backwards from 100. Like I couldn't do that! Ha! I wanted to show her!
I showed her right up until number 95. Then everything went quiet and still. It was so calm and peaceful...
