after this, there is no way you can not convince me that you are h e m i n g w a y reincarnated

This man wore striped suits with peaked lapels and fashionable shiny shoes. He drank Mumms champagne and antique brandies; he ate only sparsely and sporadically. He knew Hell's own amount of people and he was a regular in the café society in Montparnasse and elsewhere. He sponsored artists and writers, helped finance literary foundations and museum inductions. He was perfectly wealthy and content and yet he found it necessary to emphasize his once coarse roots, just to remind you how far he'd come. He liked to be complimented. He was arrogant and sophisticated beyond belief. This man was a Frenchman. Arthur called him Francis Bonnefoy.cries because this is so perfect and everything about this is perfect why ( ... )

I've been staring at this for a while now, wondering how to answer because I'm pretty sure there is no adequate response to something so wonderful. Like even I'm no longer sure where the whole "hemingway protagonist" thing came from and why my writing's some third-rate imitation of his and how my writing's going to (if at all) change from here on out. But even I don't know the answers to those questions I do know you've always given me encouragement and this kind subtle nudge and that's just so great and oh ok now I'm waffling too because gads we've known each other for ages and yes you're so right are you still on msn we are so overdue for dinner I can't

Your writing is just so beautiful that it hurts. Painfully.

I don't actually know how long we've known each other. Do you remember how we met? I don't think I do. And yes I am still on msn one day we should go on webcam and just eat our dinners with each other and it will be beautiful also do you have skype if you do have I already added you on it I really don't remember oops

It was likely a friending meme but all I remember is this long conversation about some Spain-centric project we never really got around to doing. And then there was the snowball effect and here we are years later also a few days ago a friend asked, "Have you ever seen a movie called Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy?" and then I actually fell off the bed I was sitting on and you can imagine how that went. But like yeah I think I added you on skype so let's do dinner how about tomorrow or this weekend and it'll be a proper dinner date !!!

This has been hiding in my bookmarks that I'm clearing through but I just had to say how much I enjoyed it. There was a quiet, meandering feel to it almost as if the story itself was un flâneur. It all came together for me though at the end, when you see the relationship Francis and Arthur have through how they talk to Antonio. The point they're trying to make is resounding and the highpoint for me was:

"But you've never seen a man murdered. That's the word: murdered."

"Not when you put it that way." Then a moment later: "Oh."

"'Oh.' That's a nice way of putting it."
