"Where are you from?" Malachi asked. The other kid was obviously American, but that still left a lot of options.

"I was born in Kansas," Sam explained. "But we moved around a lot. My dad's in antiques, so we never stayed in one place very long." He had the story down pat by this time and he even didn't feel as guilty about lying. "What brings you over here? You're from England, I'm gathering?"

"My dad," Malachi said. "There was some trouble in the village where I come from. My dad thought I'd be safer over here. He's a bit on the extreme side of overprotective."

Sam chuckled. "I can relate to that. My dad is very overprotective. It comes from the fact that we lost my mom when I was just a baby and the way we grew up. My older brother is overprotective, too. Do you have any siblings?"

Malachi shook his head. "Only child. But my father's been trying for years" centuries, really, but who's counting? "to have a kid, so I'm his miracle child."

"What about your mom?" Sam asked.

A shadow of grief passed over Malachi's face. "She died when I was a baby. Saving my life." He forced a friendly smile on his face. "Guess we've got that in common, too."

Sam looked away for a moment. "Yeah. I was only six months old when my mom died. Our house burned down."

"I'm sorry," Malachi said gently. "It sounds like you're close to the rest of your family, though."

Sam shrugged. "Not really. I wasn't into the family business the way my brother is, that's why I'm here."

Malachi nodded. "I get that," he said. "My family's got my whole life planned out for me, and I'm not sure if that's what I want to do."

"Maybe being away will help you figure things out for yourself," Sam said. "I'm hoping to go to law school."

"That's fantastic," Malachi said. "I haven't got a clue as to what I'll do next. Right now, I'm just enjoying being alive." He grinned.

Sam frowned. "Things were that bad back home for you?"

Malachi shook his head. "Just appreciating the possibilities. Having this much freedom is a bit of a novel concept for me."

"I can appreciate that," Sam said. "Dad would leave me and Dean in cheap motel rooms while he went to do business because it was too da... boring for us to go with him." He closed his eyes for a moment, reminding himself that admitting the truth would likely get him branded a freak or worse.

Malachi didn't miss that little verbal slip. "I can imagine. Cup o' tea, cup o' tea and some dusty old boxes. Does your dad have a time period he specializes in?"

"No, not really," Sam said. "He's pretty knowledgeable about the whole business and he has a good network of contacts to get more specific information when he needs it."

Malachi nodded. "I'm afraid I have to ask this, and feel free to tell me to fuck off if it's none of my business, but is anything going on with you and your gorgeous roommate?"

Sam blinked. "Uh... no, actually, we're just friends." He debated filling Malachi in on Lilly's love life situation. It wasn't really his place.

"Yeah?" Malachi asked. "So you wouldn't mind if I took her out?"

"Uh... I wouldn't, no," Sam said. "But there are other people who might."

"Well, tell me about them," Malachi said. "I want to know my competition."

Sam sighed. "Okay, first is Weevil. He lives across the hall and is my... um... Claire's roommate. They had some sort of relationship back home. I'm a little fuzzy on the details. He's been basically ignoring Lilly because he's dating a couple of other girls, but he threatened me if I decided to ask her out way back. And then there's this other guy, Logan, who was also her boyfriend back home. I don't know what their deal is either, but he hates the fact that Lilly is living with a guy. Personally I think she's trying to play them off of each other."

Malachi considered this. "She's not actually dating anyone present, then?"

"I really don't know the answer to that," Sam admitted. "But she's... she's a nice girl, but I don't think she's exactly girlfriend material."

"Bit of a tramp, yeah?" Malachi said knowingly.

Sam blanched at his word choice. "Tramp seems kind of harsh."

"Sorry," Malachi said. "What would you call it?"

"I dunno. She likes guys," Sam said.

"Well," Malachi said. "I am a guy. That works out nicely."

Sam shrugged. "Just don't hurt her. You seem like a good guy and I wouldn't want to have to hurt you."

"I'll be on good behavior," Malachi said with a friendly smile. "I'd rather you didn't have to hurt me, too."

Thanks to normal-i-am for playing this with me!
