[After the incident in sixth year, Sirius hadn't gone back to the Potters. He'd spent most school holidays at Hogwarts and the summers at one of the many Black estates in various countries, mostly hiding out where he knew his family wouldn't be, thanks to Regulus' owls. His uncle Alphard had left him some money, but he was doing the best he could

In a blur composed of many faceless people, Lily eventually stood at the end of a street that would lead her to the little cafe. She took a moment to catch her breath, straighten her skirt, and check her watch to see how much time she had left before Punctual Lily had left the building.
She walked at a slower pace - one anyone else would consider normal - and approached the cafe. She spotted Sirius immediately. Raking a hand through her hair, she tried to smoothen out her appearance. She smiled and approached his table. ]
Sirius!

I'm so sorry I'm late. [ Catching her breath, she says hurriedly ] I had an interview for a job my dad pulled some strings for and it ran overtime. [ Smiling, she seems to calm herself ] I'd have sent a Patronus but it'd have been slightly suspicious in front of Muggles. And the last thing I need is the Ministry on my backside.
[ She's never liked keeping Sirius waiting. Feeling guilt swell in her stomach, she fiddles with her watch, turning it a little on her wrist. ] You haven't been waiting long, have you?

[Takes his own chair,] How did the interview go? Is it for something you're interested in doing?

[She finds herself feeling the worry she carries for Sirius gnawing at her nerves. She's never liked not knowing everything about Auror training. Perhaps her lack of courage or trust in the program makes her less of a Gryffindor. Lily's just never liked not knowing everything she possibly can about some things. When it involved a friend, it only made her worry more.] How many days a week do you train? The training ... it's nothing too bad - is it?

[He reaches across the table for her hand, both to soothe the worry lines he can already see forming on her forehead and because he looks for every opportunity he can to touch her. He's always been a physically affectionate person, which is clearly reflected in Padfoot's need to lay across people, even though he's far too big to be a lapdog.] Six days... it isn't too bad, but it's training... it gets physical sometimes.

[Lily leans forward so she can wrap her fingers around his before interlacing them. Even at his words, she still feels that anxiety gnawing at her nerves.] How physical? Have you - [This isn't the type of discussion she imagined having with him over lunch. But she felt that Gryffindor courage that she's been missing since graduation stir like fire within her to pursue this thread of conversation. She doesn't want to hear the truth - to confirm any fears she has of losing her best friend in any way, shape or form - but she needs to hear it - because he is her best friend. She wants to know everything about him. Clearing her throat, she tries again.] - Have you ever been hurt badly?

Good. I don't want you to get kicked out of the program. [Quietly] Though you're way too smart to let yourself get kicked out in the first place. Strategically planning your troublemaking, Sirius?
Oh, please. I'm pretty sure I've been exposed to every part of you some time during school. [At the time she had been incredibly flustered. It wasn't every day your male friend would so easily and readily expose some part of himself. Sometimes she wishes Sirius had done that when Petunia was around - though that's more of her vindictive side than anything else. Now, she considers herself a little matured to Sirius' exposures. She won't deny at times that she enjoys them. She envies how carefree and confident he can be with his ( ... )

'Course I do! I'm not about to go causing trouble on the days when Mad Eye is in a mood, you know. I wait until there's been a good session or he's, well, not in a good mood, but in a better one.
Hmm... I think I've still got a few places you haven't see. [He looks thoughtful,] Like behind my right knee. You, though, are still a bit of a mystery sometimes. You always wear too many clothes. [Except that one summer when they had gone to the ocean and Sirius had stared. And then spent the rest of the day pretending not to stare.] I don't need to use lines on any other girls, I save them all for you.

It's good to know that all your mischief managing at school has finally paid off. I hope you don't cause too much trouble.
[Lily fans herself, teasing] Oh, Sirius! You spoil me so! [She laughs] A mystery, huh? There's not much there, you know. Just little ol' me. But I'll be sure to go out of my way to wear more layers, now. [She grins] You know, to amp up the mystery. [She narrows her eyes, her voice determined] And I may not be an Auror, but now it's going to be my mission to see behind your right knee. I bet it's more beautiful than the left. [She smiles]

If you go about amping up the mystery I might die. A little bit of teasing reveal would keep me interested, though. [Sirius winks at her and tries not to think about Lily teasingly revealing herself to him. Not when he's sitting so close to her and should not be having these thoughts about his best friend.]
