I agree with you, except I never liked Garden State right away. The first time I saw it, I got bored with it because the storyline was too weird and it was too slow for me. The second time I saw it, it was just ...ech? when I heard so many little girls around me rave about what a genius, liberating, profound movie it was and how the soundtrack was so absolutely amazing that they just had to buy it because they are just so in with the indie music, that my hatred and utter loathing began to grow uncontrollably, like some disgusting amoeba.Amen Sista. You have no idea how much I feel the same way. There is one specific person who shall remain nameless (for their own sake) that increased my dislike for Garden State. This person has obsessive complusive disorder and can't let go of the fact that Garden State is just a movie

rebecca, i couldn't have said that any better myself. i saw garden state and my first thought was that it wasn't bad but it wasn't good..just ok. an attempt to be one of those mellow, slow with no real plot, and supposedly funny and pensive types of movies. when everyone says how amazing it is, i don't understand if they say it because everyone else says it or if they truly find it that moving or great. i haven't seen lost in translation..but i shall. i completely agree with the unrealistic relationship between the annoying as hell natalie portman and depressed and stoned zach braff. disappointing. really..pointless. and the soundtrack is overrated.
i think people say it's amazing because... it's easier to do so. haha, a "mellow, slow with no real plot, and supposedly funny and pensive" type of movie is exactly what lost in translation is. now that's an amazing movie. i'm curious to see what you'll think of it.
Okay, well I guess I'll have to disagree. Partly. I do think Garden State is overrated, like Finding Neverland is, but that doesn't make it a bad movie. I thought some parts were funny as hell. The plot didn't make sense sometimes, but I think the dialogue and unique sense of humor in the movie made up for it. I have more to say but I can't really put them into words at this moment.
Yes well, I'm not saying it's a bad movie simply because it's overrated. I thought the dialogue was really awkward and cheesy. Like, someone would say something really cliche like "We just need to be comfortable with who we are" and then end it with a really weak, everyday work like "Okay?" as if that would make the sentence automatically realistic and profound. Which it doesn't.
