Part 7
Kai lead Kyungsoo over to a small mattress at the edge of the tent, resting on a pad of some sort with blankets messily thrown about over it. He helped him take a seat, placing himself on the other side of Kyungsoo and waiting for the other to settle before bring anything up.
Kyungsoo turned to him as soon as he took a seat, taking Kai’s hand in his and playing with his fingers, eyes downcast as he tried to think of what to say. “W-Well… You see, the other night… with Luhan and Baekhyun and… um… well everyone’s been telling me strange things about you.” He nearly whispered, his voice becoming shaky, more from nervous shame than anything. Surely the others were wrong about Kai. They just had to be.
“What sort of things?” Kai asked, though Kyungsoo was sure the other already knew. “Well, things like… you’re a player. And… that you lie… and you never eat or leave your tent…” He trailed off, squeezing Kai’s hand and biting his lip.
The hand gently slipped from his, slowly trailing its way up to Kyungsoo’s chin and tilting it up so that their eyes could meet. “What else?” Kai asked softly as his fingertips trailed along Kyungsoo’s jawline.
Kyungsoo shivered lightly. “T-That.. you’re mean… and hateful.” He continued, eyes glued to Kai’s. “That I’ll… wither.” he finished, unable to go on.
Kai nodded, his head tilting just slightly. “And what do you think, Kyungsoo?” He asked in a low voice.
“I think you’re wonderful. And amazing. And kind. And I don’t understand why they say those things about you. I have noticed that you don’t like public places. The only time I see you interact with crowds is when you are performing, but even then you are singled out on a stage.” Kyungsoo whispered, his eyes widening. “You’re quiet, and secretive, and perhaps a little dark, but you’ve never gave me any reason to fear you.” He stated, reaching up to take Kai’s hand back in his. “And I don’t know why I’m here right now, with you, or why you’ve chosen me to break your solitude when its so clearly evident you enjoy being alone, but I’m happy. I’m so so happy…” He concluded, unsure if this was something he should say or not. “And… it scares me.” He added, Kai’s eyebrow raising. “Because I know the summer with end, and I’ll be done with the horses, and the circus will leave here, and you’ll go too…” He felt his eyes start to sting with oncoming tears and he instantly stopped himself, dropping his eyes.
“…It’s true.” Kai answered easily, his voice as smooth as silk. “I am a trickster. A player. Hateful, crude, dishonest, even mean.” He murmured, causing Kyungsoo’s eyes to flicker up and look at him.
Kai’s eyes were dark and almost scary with the way the lamp light flickered along his features, and Kyungsoo gulped. “But I am also lonely. But who isn’t at times?” He stated, caressing Kyungsoo’s cheek, his eyes softening. “I dislike crowds, it’s true, but I do enjoy being in front of one. Single, excluded, on my own. It’s much easier that way.”
Kai’s hand cupped Kyungsoo’s cheek gently. “But you… are something different. You are not a crowd, you are Kyungsoo. Singled out, almost excluded in your own little world, your own person, unlike anyone I’ve met yet. You’re kind, gentle, caring, sincere, and everything I’m not.” Kai stated, running his thumb over Kyungsoo’s skin and admiring the way it felt under his fingertips. “But I’d like to learn to be. You pull me in, Kyungsoo. With those big eyes and smooth skin. You’re here right now because you elude me. My tricks and illusions are fake, but you hold your own radiating beauty and mystery, and I cannot help but wonder what’s going through that pretty head of yours, as I’m sure others are attracted to you for.”
Kyungsoo’s breathing was shallow as he tried to take in Kai’s words, but he found he couldn’t utter a single one back.
“I’ve been pulling some strings of my own, Kyungsoo.” He added. “Wufan and I have always been close.” He murmured, eyes flickering over Kyungsoo’s features. “We started working at this place together, working our way up from stable boy’s to where we are now. I’m just lucky I was discovered. Wufan on the other hand is smart, and cunning. He taught me a lot of what people are like. How to manipulate them with words and actions. How to pull a crowd in. How to capture their attention. I’m excellent at luring people in, yes, but I can never seem to make them stay. I have fears of my own, Kyungsoo. I’m greedy and selfish, and I want you all to myself. To lock you away in here with me like so many of my possessions, but I know I can’t do that. So instead I’m offering you a way to stay. And I’m asking for you to consider it. I’ve asked Wufan about you long before you knew I existed. After that first show, I knew I had to see you again. Out of everyone there, your eyes were the only ones I couldn’t leave. I’m just glad things were as easy as they were what with the painting job and things, otherwise I might have lost you for good.” Kai whispered, and he didn’t give Kyungsoo a moment to respond.
“Wufan’s considering other positions for you once you’ve finished with the horses. Like the circus’s own personal painter for things that need touched up on around the place, or perhaps even taking care of the animals, I think you’d be great at that. There are ways you can stay, Kyungsoo, you just have to decide…” Kai trailed off. “I never ask anything of anyone.” He stated, his brows knotting just slightly. “But I’m asking you to stay. Stay with me. Here.”
Kai leaned in, resting his forehead on Kyungsoo’s. “Please stay with me.” He whispered, and Kyungsoo knew Kai was really saying , ‘Don’t leave me alone anymore.’
But Kyungsoo also knew he couldn’t.
Kyungsoo nearly gasped when he finally grasped enough air to speak. “K-Kai… I can’t.” He whispered, his eyes filling and his mind already swimming. “H-How could I possibly stay? I just started art school, I have all these contributions helping me to attend, and my parents would never approve of me running off with some circus, and, and, I-I’m not sure this is the type of lifestyle I would want for a future family. What would we do if the circus just ended? What if you didn’t want me anymore? What if I became just another bother?” He blurted, the tears starting to spill out of his eyes.
Kai pulled him against his chest, hand resting on the back of Kyungsoo’s head as the other burrowed into his shoulder. “Kyungsoo I would never tire of you, I-“ “You’re right.” Kyungsoo interrupted. “ I’m not something you can keep in a cage like all your pets. I have a life I’ve established, dreams to follow, people to please including myself. I like the daytime, the sun on my skin, I genuinely like people and I love art.” He choked, his body shaking. “I have so much to look forward to already… how can I just give it all up for a future that’s so uncertain? People don’t just do that Kai. Can’t just do that. K-Kai… You’re like a stranger to me.” he managed, his voice trailing as sobs replaced words.
Kai was becoming desperate, frantic. “K-Kyungsoo please, you have all summer to decide, why be rash now?” He whispered, holding him tighter. “You’re the first I’ve ever done anything like this with. The only one I’ve ever wanted this from. Please just consider it. I realize we have different interests, but that doesn’t mean I can’t learn to like those things too. I can do anything if it would make you happy. Please Kyungsoo I beg of you, think of it a while and we can discuss this more.” He responded, his voice shaky, but Kyungsoo only cried harder.
The pain twisting in his chest was becoming unbearable. He honestly really liked Kai, regardless of how long they had known each other, but he just couldn’t give all up it up for a man he knew so little about, or would ever know any about for something so uncertain and unlogical. Not yet. He just couldn’t.
“I-I’m sorry.” Kyungsoo choked, pushing himself back from Kai’s embrace with a hand on his chest. He stood quickly, wiping at his eyes hastily before quickly taking off through the flaps of the tent, leaving Kai to stare hopelessly after him because they both knew chasing after Kyungsoo wouldn’t do any good.
Kyungsoo ran straight home, not bothering with stopping to get his things from the tent. He didn’t bother with the house either. No, when he was upset he knew just where to go.
He made his way out to the barn quickly, sniffling and trying to calm himself before entering so he wouldn’t spook the horses. He flipped the lights on inside and shut the door behind him before making his way down the row of stalls to the very last one on the left.
He stopped just in front of the stall, sighing when his eyes rested on the old mare. He didn’t have to reach out to her for her to hang her head out the stall and greet him. He pat her muzzle gently, a small smile tugging the corner of his lips up and he relaxed. She was his favorite, and no matter what the problem was, this was had always been comforting to him.
“I’ve had a bad day, old girl.” He whispered, the tears starting up again. “And I don’t know what to do.” He cried, stepping closer and quickly entering the stall to wrap his arms around the horse’s neck. He pet her softly, the horse almost unmoving except for the swishing tail and flicking ears.
Kyungsoo cried softly for a while by himself, staying in the stall in favor of petting the horse while he thought to keep himself calm. This was one of those times when Kyungsoo wished he was less of a coward and more of a man. But wishing doesn’t do any good, and neither does crying, so he eventually stops doing both.
‘It’s stupid and childish to think I could just throw everything away for Kai’ He tells himself over and over in his mind. Stupid and childish. Yet he can’t deny the tug of his heart, and the small voice in his head asking him, ‘but would it really matter in the long run… if you just give it all up for love?’
Kyungsoo wakes up a little later than usual the next morning, his eyes heavy and his heart even heavier as he trudges about to get ready. He spends over fifteen minutes looking for his bag of art supplies before he finally remembers he left it in his tent the night before. He spends another fifteen minutes dressing himself before making himself to go downstairs and out the door. He didn’t bother with breakfast today. He hadn’t had an appetite since lunch yesterday.
He enters the circus quietly, not a soul stirring as he makes his way back to his tent.
He starts painting another horse but stops himself as soon as he starts. His heart just isn’t in it today. Maybe because of things that happened yesterday, or maybe in a desperate, subtle attempt at dragging his time out so he could stay in the other’s presence just a little longer.
Either way, Kyungsoo eventually gives up, tossing the brush in his can of water and closing the paint. He grabs his sketch book instead, and heads out to the neighboring tent with all the animals in it. He grabs a lead rope, hooking it on one of the horses halters and leading it to the center of the tent. He hooked the lead rope onto a beam and planted himself on the ground nearby, taking a pencil out and starting to sketch, but by the time he’s done, the page is a mess of rabbits and top hats and cards and doves.
It isn’t until a crisp voice rings in his ear that Kyungsoo realizes he hasn’t been alone the entire time.
“What are you doing?” He voice asks and Kyungsoo cry’s out, jumping away and turning to face the intruder. Jongdae eyes him suspiciously, his eyes narrowing.
Kyungsoo breathes a sigh of relief and shuts his sketchbook quickly. “S-Sorry, I needed some ideas for the carousel horses.” He explains, and Jongdae’s frown fades. “…Oh.” He states simply, crossing the room and starting to open up some cages that hold a few small dogs.
“…Are you the one who does the act with the dogs in the Big Top then?” Kyungsoo asks as he stands. Jongdae nods. “Yeah. They put me out there with that big oaf Chanyeol and his lion. Did you know, he’s so bad at taming that thing that once it almost got ahold of one of my dogs?” He stated, turning towards Kyungsoo with a pup in his arms, though there was a smile on his face. “He got his ass chewed for that.” Jongdae laughed. “But since then it hasn’t been all bad. If Tao keeps his little mitts off my things then most days it’s pretty nice working here.”
“Hey…” Came a small whine from the doorway. “Minseok says I can borrow them!” Tao defends, walking up to Kyungsoo and snaking an arm around his shoulders. “Since when does Minseok own my things?” Jongdae spat, instantly frowning. Tao stuck his tongue out, pouting before turning to Kyungsoo.
“Kyungie you weren’t in your tent and I got worried. I thought you were teaching me how to paint?” He pouted even more. Kyungsoo gave an apologetic smile. “Ah, sorry Tao. I’m having an art block today. I decided to sketch instead.” He stated, and Tao seemed okay with that.
“Don’t stick yourself to him Tao, Kyungsoo’s a busy man. He doesn’t need a kid like you up his butt all day.” He stated, and Tao turned to him quickly, angry now. “Kim Jongdae I’ll hang out with whoever I want!” He shouted, and Kyungsoo instantly patted his shoulder to calm him.
“I-It’s alright Jongdae, I told him I would. He really isn’t a bother.” Kyungsoo stated, and Tao relaxed a bit. “Yeah, see? So shut up.” Tao pouted, and Jongdae cackled. “You’re so fun to mess with.” Chen smirked, moving towards the door and calling the dogs to him. “See ya around Kyungsoo, and Brat.” He called, disappearing beyond the flaps.
Kyungsoo couldn’t help but chuckle a bit at the way the two bickered, his mood picking up just slightly. “Come on Tao, Let’s try to paint some.” He murmured, unhooking the horse from the beam and putting him back in his stall before taking one of Tao’s hands and leading him back to his tent.
He spent the rest of the day with the other, making small talk here and there but mostly just letting Tao keep his mind off of Kai and on his work, showing him the differences between the brushes and paints and how colors blend and bleed into each other on canvas. ‘If only people could mix just as nice and easy.’ He thought.
Tonight would be the first night Kyungsoo did not attend Kai’s show.
