I'd never bet against anyone having an exotic pet that I thought was not appropriate. So who knows ...

Like you, having seen these scavengers in the wild, I do not want one as a pet and very much doubt if anyone could have them as a pet. I would agree with you that the pictures are a fake.

Hyenas can be kept as pets, the males are less dominant by nature so would be easier in this case. They will still be dangerous but even with rough handling I doubt a hyena would be broken, they treat each other that way in the wild from birth.

In fact they are very sociable animals and loyal to their pack. They like to cuddle and play.

So no I don't think that these hyenas even with a muzzle are suffering as much as you think. I'm not a fan of animals being kept this way but they are not automatically bad off.

and one assumes that even if they are fond of their owners, a playful nip during play with those jaws would take off a finger... :(

Yups, but I have seen a very sweet documentary of a guy who raises orphaned hyena cubs and he seems to still be all there hehe.

The hyenas were very affectionate and as he said each had their own personality. They play rough with each other but I guess they learned not to do that with the man. When they grew up they were placed in adult groups and there the guy had to be more careful as he wasn't the most dominant.

I think it's hard to hate any species of animal. They all just do what they were meant to do, even those nasty mosquitoes that give me terrible body reactions (allergy) are at least good food for other things. *smirk

So did no one see the GIANT snake the kid on the left has? Maybe it's a normal pet for them over there? Like in the California it's illegal to buy a ferret but you can own one. And in parts of Canada it's illegal to own a tortes.
