Apparently there is some kind of legal thing in DC, where if anybody in our office throws out a single piece of trash that could have been recycled, including napkins, plastic bags, etc., the firm gets fined $1,000. For each piece. NO exceptions ( Read more... )

I'd never heard of it until today. I can't imagine it applies to personal stuff, we're a large office, maybe it's some kind of statute for office buildings?

Apparently it is only for businesses and commercial buildings.

I'm actually in favor of it. It gives the businesses a reason to make sure their employees recycle in the only language business understands: money. It's been a large success at my office, with management reminding everyone at our monthly staff meetings to remember to use the recycling bins.

I understand the reasoning behind it, I'm just not a big fan of government being so in everyone's business that they are literally *going through our trash*.
