‘Do you miss her?’ He asked quietly. They were laid on their backs on the lawn, the warm summer’s day fading around them, and the stars coming out one by one above them as they watched.

‘Every day.’

He glanced over at her, and finding her hand squeezed it tightly.

‘Me too.’ He whispered.

‘It’s not like what they say is it?’

‘Nothing like it.’

‘It hurts in a way you can’t really understand, one you’ll never be able to get rid of.’

‘One day,’ he hesitated, ‘One day it won’t feel so bad.’

‘But that’s what they all say, and you know it’s not true. It doesn’t happen the way they write it. You know that.’

‘But we have to find something to believe in don’t we?’

‘We’ve got each other.’

‘Yeah we do. It’s all we have now.’

They lay there silently on the grass, as the night settled in around them, clasping each other’s hands, as a safety net, something to hold onto. They needed something to hold onto because they were lost; both of them were, without anywhere to fall.

They lay there under the blanket of stars, watching the sky for some inspiration, for something to happen, knowing somehow that the both of them were safe there because they were together and they were being watched. The stars were all coming out and they were there to see it. They weren’t going to let them just fade away though, they would fight for them, like they were going to fight to hold on and make it through.

Things had changed, and they would never be the same again. They had no choice but they had the memories and they had every reason to keep going and make her proud. They weren’t going to just let her fade away because she was gone.
