Review for this week's episode of Merlin, "The Wicked Day", cannot be written. I tried. I couldn't. I'm sorry, but Uther's death and Arthur's grief had me IN TEARS even writing this. Excuse moi, but it's impossible.
IT WAS TOO MUCH. :'(
...I only saw it Monday, as I had to work, and, as usual, I watched it with a friend. We were sobbing through almost the entire thing, it was quite awesome. :]
I'm briefly going to say what I expected of the episode. I knew it was going to touch on some pretty heavy stuff, what with Arthur clinging to his father in the trailer and all, but I did suspect that it was essentially going to be a comedic episode.
Last year, there was Goblin's Gold after the very dark two- parter, and since 4x01 and 4x02 were pretty damn scary and Lancelot just bit it, I was convinced there was going to be a LOT of light- heartedness in this one. And it did have a lot of laugh out loud moment, but, and I'm sure you'll agree, it was in its core a highly dramatic piece of television. I was actually quite surprised.
BUT-- despite series 4 thus far not being particularly tight- fisted with character deaths-- it was an absolutely fantastic episode. There were bits I was not really happy with, but the epicness was undeniable :]
However, my main problem (pretty much only complaint, though) with it was that there was just so much going on in this episode!
We had Arthur's birthday, and an assassin (pretty standard for Merlin, I suppose), then we had Uther being almost killed trying to save his son (squeeage was happening. May now be partially deaf on left ear), we had Dragun trying to heal him, failing, Arthur therefore (understandably) hating on magic, UTHER DYING, and, squished into the last 3 minutes, Arthur's CORONATION. The epicness of that last bit was kind of drowned out by everything else that was going on. I would have liked it better if they had taken their time with the coronation, maybe have it happen 1 or 2 episodes down the line, so we could have seen the preparations (...and maybe some Arthur/Gwen confide-y scenes...?), and it also would have gained in significance.
But anyway, it rocked my socks, and OMG dragon's egg!! XD
That's all I have to say. Pathetic. Sorry.
:)
