I did my taxes tonight...I knew I was going to have to pay, so I waited until the last minute. I just didn't know I was going to have to pay so very, very much ( Read more... )

Looks like you need to start house hunting then. Any chance you could buy the two houses where you live now? I know you love that place (and I do, too).

No, no chance. I would love to buy the whole thing, but my landlord is not selling. I am looking and prices seem to be sinking, but my neighborhood is still too expensive. I really value where I live, how close it is to everything I do, how it feels to live there. Anyway, it seems silly that I can afford to rent in my neighborhood but I can't afford to buy!

I want my 40 acres and a mule !!! farmgirl23 April 12 2005, 16:51:35 UTC
I read that Armericans work unitl May 10th each year to pay taxes...I went to my CPA who charged me $200.00 to tell me that I owe $2500.00 in taxes...so that means I will be working to pay taxes until probably July then I get to pay federally backed student loans so I figure out of 26 paychecks a year I get to keep around 3 for me....wow...did I get this screwed up or what...If I had never gone to school and was working for minimum wage I would proabably get to keep a higher percentage of my earnings..or better yet if I sat my ass down and refused to work and was able to get welfare and social security I would actually have a higher net asset then I do now....who woulda thunk that trying to go to school and better myself would actually result in my selling my financial soul to the feds....isn't slavery illegal? Just give me my 40 acres and a mule and I will never ask the feds for a thing again.....

The tax structure in the U.S. is messed-up. But I try my best and stay sane at it all. My trick to not paying taxes at the end of the year is to shrink my paycheck as small as it can go. I contribute to my 401K and I claim 0 exemptions. In the odd years (2003, 2005) that I can legally claim Austen I get a ton of money back. It's like a 0% interest forced savings account. But I get a little "weeee" each year around February because of it!

a bit behind the times... herzchen April 12 2005, 21:37:45 UTC
i didn't file my own taxes, until this year. they were so easy that even after my mom no longer claimed me as a dependent (3rd year of college?), she just did them for me, as i was often overseas or something. it could not have been simpler this time around- i had been intimidated, but i literally spent 5 min. filling out the form and then filed on the automated phone system. since i was out of the country living off of a 500 euro / month stipend for half of 2004 and temping, unemployed, or just starting my current job during the leftover months, i got a little over $100 back. i think i'd claimed 2 exemptions ( ... )
