Update

In an effort to avoid doing any real work.

Okay since I suck at updating I will do a couple big catch up posts.
A few weeks ago we decided to take a trip to France. We can get to two small towns just inside the French border for free on our Semestertickets (travelcards) so we decided to go to Wissembourg for the day. Sod’s law after weeks of sunshine it pissed it down all day so it was kind of deserted when we got there and most places were closed for lunch. So we found a small French restaurant to get something to eat and to get out of the rain.

I’d actually forgotten how much I loved France and how fun the French language is. All the people we met in the restaurant and later in the cafe were very friendly and helpful. As the town’s very close to the French/German border most people speak both languages. This leads to a bit of confusion when you go into shops and they ask which language you speak> I totally fail at making decisions and can never decide which one to say. I just end up standing there stuttering for a few minutes as though I can’t speak any language, with all my friends laughing at me.
Now Wissembourg is a very small town and there isn’t a lot to do. Plus most of the attractions are just buildings you look at from the outside. There is however a stunning church that they started building in the 10th century.

In order to get out of the rain we took a 45 minute ride on the tourist train thing. There were headphones where you could listen in either French, German, English or Dutch to someone explaining about the town. The English recording was made by some with a strong Scottish accent (or maybe Irish I can’t remember) so it was really hard to understand and we ended up flicking between German and French.

An funny looking building that was the town's hospital many years ago.

To round off the day we visited the cake shop, which is apparently one of the oldest in France. The cakes were AMAZING. They were all individually made and very chocolatey. For some reason they also randomly sold smoked salmon parcels which were gorgeous and I have been craving ever since.
