Hilary Mantel won the Booker! Oh! I am so pleased. In the taxi where I heard the news on the radio I exclaimed She did it! and clapped my hands in glee ( Read more... )

Hi Laz hi hi!!

Oh you'll love it. It's a scrumptious book. Not QUITE as perfect as Place of Greater Safety (a prodigy of a book, and I should know, I've read it five times), butjust absorbing, magnificent, superb, wonderful. Hilary Mantel really is our sort of lady.

In fact I remember being at your place once and making you shut up so I could rudely watch a documentary about her on your telly!

Ha! I had forgotten that, you cheeky thing. ;)

I am very much looking forward to it as it's about my era of historical everything. x

Great! Can't wait for a) the paperback or b) getting the hardback from t'local library which has finally, after 2 1/2 years in hiatus hell, re-opened in new-found glory.

I read the first page in t'bookstore.

When do I get to read your next one??????? I am desperate to!

Also: I am going on a 5-day Arvon creative writing workshop in Yorkshire next week!!!!!!!!! (Exclamation marks denote excitement!)

Oooh I'd be so interested to see what you think. She does some interesting things with narratology, quite apart from anything else. She's just such a magnificent, utterly masterful (mistressful?) writer. I adore her. But yes it is a bloody big book, even in trade pbk!

My new one.... Hmm. Can't say. But not too long now, thank god. *cough*thistimenextyear*cough*

And oh! right! you're not in the US! I wasn't sure (can never keep up with you gallivanting flisters). Your workshop sounds very tralala.... I've just signed up to attend a one-day workshop with some American writer. I hope he's bloody good as it cost a fortune!

!!!!!!!!

Duckie, I think I must insist you read Mantel. She is simply our kind of girl. If you can't face the enormity of Wolf Hall, head straight to Place of Greater Safety. It is honestly one of my two all-time best books in the world.

Hello my dearie, hello.

Yes, yes! I've read Giving Up the Ghost and Beyond Black, so I'm very much aware that she's our kind of girl (how right you are). But I haven't read A Place of Greater Safety - I mentally put it on my to-read list as soon as you mentioned it. Your recommendation is good enough for me any day, m'dear!

Hello there, hello! *waves*

I think you'll like it. If you don't fall desperately in love with Camille Desmoulins I don't know what is what.

Plus, it has people in red hats. :)

How are you going Duckie? Snug?
