how do you write?

i feel the urge to write about china, but i hate everything that comes out. i think in phrases or puns, or even worse, academic theses. how do i write creative pieces of prose? i can't shake my school vocabulary, and i am paralyzed by the fear that my writing on china will be as simpistic or aggressively nostalgic as as the things i have read and ( Read more... )

i think it helps sometimes when a blog has a focus. like "fulbright in shanghai" which would be like a diary for friends which my friend is doing from her fulbright in venezuela. or like myopenwallet.net where every entry is on some aspect of how to spend, make, and save money. the focus of the blog is sort of a working thesis and each entry can be exploring or testing it. then again you dont have to write a blog. you could have 3, as in 3 vantage points: china scholar, awed/frightened foreigner, literary ex-pat, political commentator. and then again they could all be rolled into one.
