Notes on a Scandal

I saw Notes on a Scandal this afternoon and it was pretty good. It was a good continuation of an apparent trend I have of seeing disturbing movies with Anne, Perfume being the first. Anywho, at one point in the movie, it's Christmastime and various things are taking place, all of which involve people wearing paper crowns. I'm trying not to laugh ( Read more... )

My family had crackers at our Christmas dinner this year. They were little ones, though, sans paper crown. We just got jokes and a silver charm.

well, we did invent rock and roll (and I guess jazz too - but nobody counts that) Rock (and again jazz) had unique styles of dance associated with them.
maybe the problem is that American also pioneered the idea of selling culture in the marketplace. The traditional dances of whereeverstan don't have much market exchange value, but the cultural product of America are very lucrative. People buy our rock records all over the world (and our TV shows, movies, etc) so much so that the average person is unable to tell where culture ends and capitalism begins. Which I suppose says something entirely else about our culture

Arguably, Rock 'n Roll and Jazz are African American inventions...

I guess the real reason is that our "culture" just hasn't existed for long enough to come up with its own identity and now everything is globalizing at such an intense degree that we don't really have a chance.
