I've read GRRM's journal and the post he made about eroding freedoms. While I understand where he is coming from on the topic, his seatbelt example doesn't make much sense to me

Strangely enough, my husband and I argued about this today.
We were actually driving behind some bikers who weren't wearing a helme, which I find to be a completely moronic decision, but hey - if they're adults, who am I to say they can't decide on their own? I mentioned seatbelts being along the same vein... but hubby made some really good points about people in accidents not wearing seatbelts turning into projectiles potentially hurting others, and about the cost of healthcare in this country for vegetative MVA peeps.
I personally don't think these even go as far as complaining about the airline security issues myself, but the fact is, I'm a populist. I believe that whatever is good for the majority of the population should be law.
Funny, they were running commercials over the summer (not sure if it was the gov't or some other organization) urging adults to wear helmets for not just biking, but for playing hockey and other sports. They were showing adults with kids all wearing helmets, and their theme was something to the effect that a head injury is no less dangerous or damaging to the brain just because you're an adult
