Japanese Fan Columbine

I would enter this photo into the CWF photo contest if this species of columbine (Aquilegia flabellata) were native to Canada. The rain finally stopped so I took terraprime's advice and took some pictures of the columbine in my front garden with the raindrops still on it. This flower has been in bloom for about a week now - I love it, the colour is so ( Read more... )

Those are nice.

Hey, you're like an awesome gardening person and stuff. Can you recommend some flowers that are fairly low maintenance and are fairly full of variety?

Thanks Kal...I don't know about "awesome", but I am enjoying it....last year was my first attempt at gardening EVER so I am still quite the novice!

I'm not sure which zone you are in - probably one much warmer than mine! - but I can think of two kinds off-hand that you might want to try...both are annuals so you would have to plant them every year (which is good if you're like me and afraid of planting something permanent that you'll hate or will spread invasively to where you don't want it). Impatiens are good low-maintenance flowers that are good for shady areas and come in many colours and different varieties; portulaca is very drought-resistant and good for dry, sunny areas. I planted impatiens in my front garden last year and they looked beautiful right until the frost killed them. (If you scroll down to my May 10 entry re: skunk hole there's a picture of the purple and pink impatiens I planted last year ( ... )

OMG.................SON, have you been stalking me? We live in GA and try to only plant impatients, portaluca and some other "succulent" flower that I don't know the name of. Kal, the portaluca are very freaking easy to plant and maintain. We like that they spread and they aren't isolated to one color per plant. Very pretty.
