Garden Update

I'm almost finished my gardens. In the front garden I just need to buy a few more plants, and then apply a mulch. I've been gradually filling in the skunk hole - there's been no sign of digging in a week now. If it stays like that for another week I'll block it off with the rocks again ( Read more... )

But of course! :) My irises out front are in bloom so I'll take some pictures of those. I think it will probably be another month before my seedlings bloom, however.

Speaking of gardening...

I'm looking to get some plants put down around the base of the tree. The tree itself is at the south-east corner of the house, so the plants will get direct sunlight, though a bit of a shade from the tree. What generic and hardy plants are there to choose from? Nothing fancy-like, just plain stuff will do. Some flowers would be nice, though. I'm thinking alternating hostas and with some flowering annuals. Ideas?

Hostas are nice - they'll provide lots of foliage.

As I mentioned to Kalbear, impatiens are nice, especially if your tree casts a lot of shade for a good part of the day. They are low-maintenance plants and come in a range of colours from purple, red, coral, pink and white. If your tree is small and lets in a lot of sunlight, you can choose from a much wider selection of annuals, such as petunias or geraniums. The best thing to do is to go to a nursery, see what kinds of flowers you like, and either ask someone or research online whether they would be suitable for your site.

Thanks for the tip! At least now I have a few names I can go look up and check out. :)

No problem! And if you find you don't exactly love any of the flowers I mentioned, try going to the library and picking up a book on annuals. I picked up one on sale and fell in love with half the pictures. There are so many gorgeous plants available, I'm sure you'll find some that you love.
