I HAVE MADE LIPSTICK, Y'ALL. OUT OF MOTHERFUCKING CRAYONS.

So, last week some time I saw this tutorial and said OMG I MUST DO THIS even though I don't wear a whole lot of lipstick. Today, I finally obtained the last of my ingredients and got to work. I made two lipsticks (well, little pots of lipstick) for me, and two for my coworker's little boy that he can use as face paint if he wants.

I highly recommend doing this if you wear lipstick or use face paint. It's fun, you have an infinite range of colors, and it works out to be a lot cheaper. I got my shea butter, a pound, for $10 from Amazon, 8 ounces of castor oil for around $3 at Walmart, and a little box of 30 bead containers for like $10. Crayolas are cheap as fuck, of course, and you get two lipsticks out of each one. You could go in on the castor oil and shea butter with someone else and pay even less. I estimate the four colors I made cost me around $1.60.

Here are some notes I made:

Shea butter prices vary widely - even if you can get it locally, you might be better off ordering online. For example, Whole Foods has it for around $20 a pound, but I got a pound from Amazon for just over $10. Of course, I get free two-day shipping because I have Amazon Prime, so once you factor in shipping costs and times, you might prefer to get it locally. Shea butter has a natural scent something like anise. I didn't mind it, but if you do, you can get refined shea that has been deodorized. Alternately, I've seen cocoa butter recipes as well. I've also seen jojoba oil mentioned instead of castor oil.

Get everything ready in the bowl while the water is heating. Crayons can be surprisingly tricky to peel! If you plan on making several different colors in one batch, you might want to have more than one bowl so you're not having to clean out a bowl between every batch.

My shaky hands make it hard to spoon the fresh lipstick into the container. Tried using a medicine syringe, but it's hard to clean afterwards. I must ponder this further.

Glitter crayons give a nice subtle sparkly effect.

In other news, my job is in a dicey neighborhood, and I'm used to seeing all kinds of sketchy things on the ground as I walk in - liquor bottles and beer cans, needles, dirty clothes, etc. Today, though, I saw something that had me completely flummoxed: an empty Efferdent wrapper. Efferdent, if you don't know, is a denture cleaner. One puts it in a glass of water, where it gets all fizzy, and then one puts one's dentures in the glass to be fizzed clean. I had this image of someone walking along with a glass of water, and just as they were about to drink it, they said, "Oh! My dentures need fizzing!" They then took out their stash of Efferdent, followed the above process, and continued walking down the street with their fizzy tooth water held proudly aloft.

That neighborhood is a strange and magical place.
