There's nothing quite like getting a bat out of your house at 0500 in the morning. It's almost better than caffiene...or it would be if you took away the whole shaking after the adrenaline's worn off thing. For those interested in the preservation of wildlife, the bat was uninjured when it left my care. I knocked him out of the air with a bag ( Read more... )

my Australian friend dewhitton, a/k/a Battyden, rescues and cares for bats (and other wildlife) that have come out second-best in their encounters with humankind. bats are pretty neat.

i'm surprised that Bell didn't attempt to chase the bat around the room; for that matter, i'm surprised that Bell hasn't also taken up the challenge from the mice. (i know Oreo wouldn't bother.) but your house is surrounded by woods, so it stands to reason that all sorts of small critters will get in.

The first I noticed it was when Bel started to stare in circles at the ceiling. I was surprised she didn't bark, but she pretty much was content just watching. When I was doing the catching I made her stay outside the room.

Sadly, she hasn't caught any mice. She'd get a huge whopping treat for that!

just make sure neither of your pets eats any mice (or other small woodland visitors) - those critters can harbor internal parasites.

as for keeping unwanted wildlife out of your house... it's a good idea to use silicone caulk to fill up even the smallest gaps or cracks, everywhere - around utility pipes/wires, the hookup for the outdoor hose, window frames, door frames, air vents, the eaves of the roof, the "flashing" around the chimney. if it's at all possible, stuff some fine-gauge steel wool into the space before you caulk it.
