I was going to comment on this poem, but I didn't because I couldn't think of what to say, other than it gave me this odd, unsettled feeling. It just hit me (thanks to a high school friend who brought it up): Reminds me of Richard Cory by Edwin Arlington Robinson. And recently I reread 15 Portraits of Despair where one of the stories is about a woman kills herself and the cops are like, "You'd think she had everything to live for."
So while I think you write beautifully, I really can't help but think "I've read this before." I'm sorry for the long but essentially pointless comment! It's just my two cents.
Whoa, now that's a different reading! I never meant to make the poem seem like a suicide like the two others you've mentioned, only that the boy simply died, due to illness or whatever means. Sometimes most people live unexciting lives, and they just leave with no resounding note of finality, just like that. I was pondering on the concept of Mono no Aware. xD
LOL this is me bringing what I've previously read to what I'm presently reading! :))
Okay, not quite suicide, but still a classic case of "good people just die for no reason" (at least from where I'm reading it) although I didn't pick up on the unexciting lives bit, hahaha! And for some reason the last line made me think that in spite of an otherwise fulfilling life, the main character wasn't exactly happy? I DON'T KNOW, LOL.
