Well, I am terrible at kanji, so Chinese would hypothetically be good for me....butttttttttttttttttttt, after Japanese the continuation of French and German come next. ;)

if you're planning to get a ph.d in asian studies or something, most schools are going to ask that you're fluent in japanese, proficient in chinese and have at least a reading knowledge french, german or russian. my faculty mentor recommended french or german.
