He knew, and yet...
Ginko's hand reached toward her and took hers, and he leaned down to press the bridges of their noses close, lightly brushing her chin with his other hand.
"I love you," he murmured quietly, his lips moving where they were and not brushing against hers.

A promise is a promise is a lie.
She smiled ruefully, the smile not quite reaching her eyes. Love was everything and nothing at once, and she didn't know which one it was. (I love you, Priscilla, came a voice from long past, a voice that no longer said anything to her, a voice she no longer could hear.)
Then she looked at the man in front of her, and she thought of the men behind her, and she wondered how life became this complicated. And he was warm, and she was lonely, and as she pressed into him, she thought that she might have felt warm. If there was another world, another time, then she had all the possibilities in the world.
She arched her neck and tilted her head up, and she almost felt regret when her lips pressed against his. Sorrow and loneliness and promises made and promises broken, what more can one person feel?
For that moment, they were just two lonely people, living in a lonely world.

Just reading, though? What about more outdoorsy activities? You know, something that gets the blood flowing?
