For those of you who care (and you know who you are) I should be passing by Spokane at 1:40 AM Pacific time, whenever the heck that is. I think it's 12:20 AM pacific right now. Even though it looks we'll have a 35 minute stopover, don't bother to try to meet me at the station :)

Hopefully I'll be asleep by then.

The mountains are wow. And, um, wow. And very, very wow. Some of them are covered with trees, so that all you can see are trees upon trees upon trees upon wow.

p.p.s. and did I mention how wow they were? I can't sufficently convey their wow'ness.

Besides the privacy, the best thing about a sleep compartment is the ability to lie down and *really* stretch. Even if the futon didn't convert to a bed, it'd be no worse than sleeping on a couch, something I have some practice with. And even that would be better than trying to sleep in coach or business class, which isn't much different if you ask ( Read more... )

Like every other sleeper car train I've been on, the Empire Builder's corridors are extremely narrow. This has its good and points. On the one hand, narrow corridors mean you don't fall down when the train rocks from side to side, as it is wont to do. On the other hand there's no way to let people pass except to step into a sleep compartment, ( Read more... )

The scenery is certainly different than in MA, but it's the same sort of different. The land is currently of the rolling hills variety, like the sand dunes of some desert movie, only with grass instead of sand. Ocassionally I see areas that have obviously been cultivated, while other areas I can't tell, maybe these fields are being left fallow. I' ( Read more... )

More frustrating is the lack of cell phone coverage anywhere near the lounge or the boarding area in general. Other than stranded in the middle of nowhere, can you think of a better place where you'd want cell phone coverage? Oh well. After a multi hour layover, I boarded the number 7 train "Empire Builder".

Destination: Seattle!
