For those of you wondering about where "Islam meets occultism," pick up "Spiritual Body and Celestial Earth" by Henry Corbin. He writes about Shi'i Islam through the lens of gnosticism - very, very good stuff.
Heh. Certain friends of mine, some of whom are in California, have been very influenced by Corbin's works. I haven't read much of his stuff but did read his biography, The World Turned Inside Out. Melted my brain in a good way.
first time i heard of Henry Corbin was by way of Harold Bloom's Omens of Millennium, a sad fact in retrospect, given Bloom's movement from semi-radical theorist to something of a reactionary prig. will definitely keep my eyes open for the Corbin text.
