A week before the day, signs appear, taking over the windows of the florist near Don's apartment. He feels sick, aching in the pit of his stomach, every time he sees them.
On Sunday he calls Charlie. "It's the 11th, buddy."
There's silence for a minute. "I know," Charlie says quietly.
"I'll pick you up in a little while."
"Okay."
Don doesn't try to make conversation, lets the silence ride with them for ten miles. When they get there he lets Charlie walk ahead, trying to tamp down his bitterness at the sight of those curls bowing before her headstone.
