Whatever happened to little boys playing cops and robbers? Bang, bang...I shot you. With a make believe gun, made with the thumb and index finger, you were either the cop, or the robber..playing...like kids do

...Wow. That was a really well thought-out post. Can I link to it eventually?
Apart from that, I actually am againt corporal punishment in any of its forms (and on a personal note, it never did anything for me except make me really sullen and hate my parents), but I'm not sure about the whole guns mess.
I mean, it's pretty insane that Columbine wasn't an isolated incident but rather, one in a string of school shootings. That kind of would seem to indicate that it's the society that's fucked over so although yes, being very on guard might work to cut down the chances of anyone successfully pulling off a repeat of Columbine, it won't remove their desire to do so. Cut down on the bullying, discourage cliquing and harassment, and maybe that'll work better.
After all, isn't it more logical to take away the source rather than the symptoms?
The only problem with bullying, cliquing and harassment with kids is..they're kids. It's always been known that kids are cruel to other kids. But if parents don't teach their kids how to deal with things like this, as is our responsibility, it's going to get horribly bad.
And no, I'm not saying spanking a child will solve all problems. I'm saying that parents are afraid to do anything other than a soft tone "You shouldn't do that", and we shouldn't be afraid to raise our own children. It's our responsibility, but the means to carry out that responsibility keep getting taken away.
I would like to be able to link to this post at some point, love. It's very well-written and it sums up so many things about society and parenting these days.
I am with you. I have had run-ins with people when I have carried my son, kicking and screming, out of a store. I told her to mind her own fucking business. On the other hand, another lady came up to me outside that store and said she was behind me 100%, and was about to tell the other woman to buzz off if I had not beat her to it

As a teacher, and a parent, I agree with everything you said. And there is this...some people assume their child will be taught social skills at school, and that we have the responsibility for disciplining kids appropriately...but believe me when I say that our hands are just as tied as the parents are.
