I knew about Dhalgren because it was SF, but I tried another Delany novel and... decided Dhalgren wasn't worth the purchase. I read Catcher because someone gave it to me (possibly Tigger) -- there were some bits I related to, but nothing startling. I became slightly worried about being "phony", but eventually decided this was the wrong question.
My Highly Influential books at that age, to the best of my recollection:
* Ringworld: light on characters, but... dude... an artificial ring-shaped world with a habitable surface area many thousands of times that of Earth. COOL.
* 2001: A Space Odyssey (yes, the book, not the movie1) because, like, realistic spaceships with shiny buttons and graphical displays and little tablets that play newscasts3. Dude ( ... )
