applicant #037

Oct 09, 2011 16:42

01. When you die what would you most like people to do when they hear your name?
1. Miss you and smile,
2. Ask for more stories about your adventures,
3. Think in admiration of your achievements,
4. I don't care what people think about me when after I'm dead, it's when I'm alive that matters.

I almost picked #3, but what I want here is to be remembered for who I truly was and I think I'd like it if even after I died people were still interested in getting to know me through stories. It would mean I'm important.

02. What power would you like to have?
1. Invisibility
2. Super Strength
3. The ability to change the past
4. The ability to change your appearance at will
5. Mind Reading
6. The ability to talk to animals

I was a little torn between this and mind reading. In the end I think #4 would be the best for me. Outward appearance matters a lot more than what a lot of people would think. It would be so convenient if I could trick people into seeing whatever I want them to see, it would really help my self-image, and I can look different every day depending on what I feel like. What if I wanted to be taller? Or if I felt more feminine one day and more masculine the next? Or if I suddenly wanted blonde hair, or what about red, blue, or dark brown? I'd like to see how people react differently to each change as well. So many possibilities.

03. What are you most looking forward to learning at Hogwarts?
1. Apparition and disapparition
2. Transfiguration
3. Flying on a broomstick
4. Hexes and jinxes
5. All about magical creatures
6. Secrets about the Castle
7. Every area of magic I can

All of them! There are so many interesting and fun and amazing things to learn at Hogwarts. Makes me sad they're not real. I'd be all over everything if I'm a student there, because dude, an entire world of magic. In real life I'm not focused on one subject/field either. I realize it's not the best thing to do because it means I'm not going to be an expert at anything if I keep this up, you know what they say about jacks of all trades. I wish I have the time and ability to learn and be good at everything. I still want to take whatever classes I want though!

04. Which road tempts you the most?
1. The sunny, grassy lane
2. The Narrow dark lantern lit alley
3. The twisting leaf-strewn path in the woods
4. The cobbled street lined with ancient buildings

I like forests.
#1 sounds nice, but could also be too hot or full of gnats, haha. I did almost choose this one, until I decided I liked forest environments more.
I could get mugged in #2.
#4 is ok I guess. It doesn't appeal to me much, not sure why.

05. Four boxes are placed before you. Which do you open?
1. The small tortoiseshell box, embellished with gold, inside which some small creature seems to be squeaking
2. The gleaming jet black box with a silver lock and key, marked with a mysterious rune that you know to be the mark of Merlin
3. The ornate golden casket, standing on clawed feet, whose inscription warms that both secret knowledge and unbearable temptation lie within
4. The small pewter box, unassuming and plain, with a scratched message upon it that reads ‘I only open for the worthy’

I'd open all of them if I could, but since I have to choose only one of these, #3 is the most interesting to me. I'd be curious about what kind of secret knowledge it contains, and I love holding secrets and gaining knowledge. As for the temptation part, that would be a test for myself to see if I could resist it, or at least how far I can go.
On why I didn't choose the other ones:
#1 - It's presumably some kind of animal, do I really want to release it? Maybe, I don't know. I don't know if it's dangerous or not, or what it would do once I open the box, so opening this one first might not be a good idea. I might show it to someone who knows more about magical creatures before opening it myself. Unless of course I couldn't help it and open it anyway against better judgment. That happens sometimes.
#2 - This one just isn't as interesting as the others. I'd still try it just because it's locked and because it has a rune I recognize. And it might have some intriguing Merlin stuff in there.
#4 - I'd like to see if I'm worthy, what's in box, and why someone has to be "worthy" to gain access to it. But what if I'm not worthy? I'd feel bad about myself, and then I'd be pissed at the box for thinking I'm unworthy. What's it supposed to mean by "worthy" anyway? How does it judge worthiness? If I get to open all the boxes, I might open this next out of overwhelming curiosity, or last out of fear of failure and I need to mentally prepare myself.

06. You are walking and come to a crossroads. Which path do you take?
1. The path that leads to a beach
2. The path that leads through a forest
3. The path that leads to a castle

I'm not sure which one I want to pick actually. I'm just going with forest because I generally like forests.

07. Which item would you pick out of a chest?
1. Dusty glass bottle
2. Ornate mirror
3. Rolled-up scroll
4. Silver dagger
5. Jewel
6. Old book
7. Glove

It's the most attractive looking object, which means I'd pick this up first. After that, I'd definitely go through all of these if I can.

08. How would you like to be remembered in history?
1. Being Wise
2. Being Good
3. Being Bold
4. Being Brave

I guess I value wisdom out of all of these.
Being remembered as just "good" doesn't sit well with me. Maybe it's because the people I know in my life who are obsessed with "goodness" are actually pretty close-minded and see things as only good or bad without question, and they do things they think are "good" for no other reason than because it's the accepted "good" thing to do, because they want to appear good. I don't think being good is a definitive trait of mine either, with or without the subjectivity, so being remembered as that wouldn't be completely accurate.
I don't think I'm particularly bold.
I'd like to be remembered as brave too, but if I have to choose then I'm placing wisdom just a little above bravery. You have to be wise to know when and how to be brave, for one thing.

09. Would you rather invent a potion that would give you...
1. Power?
2. Love?
3. Glory?
4. Wisdom?

I think everyone, including myself, could use a little more wisdom. If I were to release into the world a means of gaining something, wisdom might be, well, the wisest choice. Power would be too dangerous. Love and glory wouldn't feel right coming from potions and most people would misuse them as well.

10. Which do you find most difficult to deal with?
1. Boredom
2. Cold
3. Hunger
4. Loneliness
5. Being ignored

Cold and hunger are physical things that can easily be dealt with. Obviously by turning on the heat/putting on more layers or getting some food to eat would fix everything instantly, but even if nothing's available my body would get used to it after a while or I'd find something to distract me.
For me, unpleasant or negative states of mind are the greatest challenges. It feels pretty close to impossible to get out of the harmful way of thinking once you're in it. It may seem irrational but it's true. Boredom is very hard to find a quick fix for sometimes, because once I'm severely bored, all I can think of is how bored I am and how much I hate it and how nothing would ever completely relieve me from it. But boredom isn't the kind of thing that can push me into a depressive episode, the way loneliness can. I may be an introvert but once I'm really feeling lonely, living just doesn't seem fulfilling anymore. Being isolated and knowing there is absolutely no one you can turn to, talk to, get close to, that no one understands or cares about you, not even a little bit, is one of the worst things ever. You can't shake that feeling even if you're with people you know. I consider being ignored as something related to loneliness, which is why I decided to pick #4 over #5. Being ignored is near the top of my most hated list, but I think the reason why it's so horrible is because ultimately it leaves you feeling alone. Of course you'd feel anger at the people ignoring you, but eventually you start pushing people away after one too many times of being ignored, and it turns into a vicious cycle of getting more and more isolated, more and more lonely.

11. Four goblets are placed in front of you, which would you choose to drink?
1. Foaming, silvery liquid that sparkles as though containing ground diamonds
2. Smooth, thick purple drink that smells of chocolate and plums
3. Golden liquid, which makes sun spots dance around the room
4. Mysterious black liquid, which gives the drinker strange visions

I don't know if anything bad would happen to me if I drink any of these. All of them could be poisonous. Or they might just taste nasty or have other unpleasant effects. #2 smells delicious though, maybe it tastes delicious too.

12. A troll has gone berserk in the headmaster’s office and is going to destroy the precious items. In what order would you save the following?
1. Cure dragonpox potion
2. Merlin’s Books
3. Student records

2, 3, 1
I thought a long time about whether I want to save the books first or the records. I already know I'd save the potion last because it could be brewed again. The cure for dragonpox isn't a rare thing. I don't know if the books or the records could be as easily replaced, and I really, really hate seeing records and data and information being destroyed. My final decision after much debate is saving the books first because it's easier, and they're very likely to be ancient, unique, and invaluable seeing as how they're called Merlin's Books, meaning they belonged to Merlin. They could be full of important magical knowledge in the original text. I really hope the student records could be magically salvaged if I didn't get to all of them in time, or that there are copies elsewhere.

13. Once every century, the Flutterby bush produces flowers that adapt their scent to attract the unwary. What would they smell like to you?
1. The sea
2. Fresh parchment
3. Home
4. A crackling log fire

I love paper and the smell of it. The sea either stinks or smells like fresh air/nothing, home doesn't smell like anything in particular for me, and we don't burn logs here so I don't know if I would follow the scent of a log fire.

14. Which would you most hate being called by other people?
1. Being Ordinary
2. Being Selfish
3. Being Ignorant
4. Being Cowardly

Ooh, this one would burn. I hate ignorance and how truly ignorant people tend to not want to change, so being called ignorant would be the worst for me. I'd be likened to the kind of irritating, clueless people who blab about things they don't know, making themselves look like stupid assholes, and yet they never bother to learn. I'd hate #1 too, but ordinary is not as bad as being ignorant. #2 would probably be true so I have no problem with being called selfish. #4 isn't great either, but I'd argue with what I think are good, legitimate reasons to be cowardly in whatever situation I'm being cowardly in.

15. Which would you rather be?
1. Liked
2. Imitated
3. Praised
4. Envied
5. Feared
6. Trusted

Being praised and trusted means that you're liked. Being imitated would be weird if flattering, so I wouldn't want that. I don't like copycats copying me. Envy and fear are cool at first, until people start trying to harm you.

16. A muggle confronts you and says that they are sure you are a witch or wizard. Do you:
1. Ask what makes them think so
2. Agree and walk away, leaving them wondering about the truth
3. Say yes and tell them you'll jinx them if they don't leave
4. Tell them you think perhaps they need to call the mental hospital

I'd really like to know what led them to that conclusion! I want to know their reasoning, and if I'm that obvious, or if they're just really smart and observant, or if it was a lucky guess. Plus I wouldn't be giving anything away by asking, I could act like I'm only humoring them.

17. Which are you most afraid of?
1. Heights
2. Small Spaces
3. Isolation
4. Dark

I have a fear of heights, especially edges, railings, and things like shaky ladders. Anything that means I have a chance of falling. It's kind of embarrassing how much these scare me. Some exceptions are when I'm in an enclosed space, like cable cars or if I'm looking out a glass window, because there's no chance of me falling, and I'm not afraid of things like parasailing either because when I'm up there on the parachute it doesn't feel like I'm gonna fall. I like to think that if I can fly I wouldn't be afraid of heights anymore because if I slip I can just fly up and not crash to the ground. See, what I really am afraid of is getting hurt, accidents, and death.
As for the other options:
I have no problem with small spaces.
I talked about how awful isolation is above, but I don't fear it.
The dark isn't so scary so much as things that you can't see and could hurt you.

18. One of your house mates has cheated in a Hogwarts exam by using a self-spelling quill. Now he has come top of the class in Charms, pushing you into second place. Professor Flitwick is suspicious of what happened. He draws you to one side after his lesson and asks you whether or not your classmate used a forbidden quill. What do you do?
1. Lie and say you don’t know (but hope that somebody else tells professor flitwick the truth.)
2. Tell Professor Flitwick that he ought to ask your classmate (and resolve to tell your classmate that if he doesn’t tell the truth, you will.)
3. Tell Professor Flitwick the truth. If your classmate is prepared to win by cheating, he deserves to be found out. Also, as you are both in the same house, any points he loses will be regained by you, for coming first in his place.
4. You would not wait to be asked to tell Professor Flitwick the truth. If you knew that somebody was using a forbidden quill, you would tell the teacher before the exam started.

I'm definitely not the kind of person who'd do #4, as I'm just not a tattletale and I don't like doing it. I wouldn't like the idea of letting the person go either though, especially when he's pushing me into second place. This is when I don't care we're in the same house - when he's threatening my place through cheating, and like the option says I can get the points back so points aren't an issue. Also, since Professor Flitwick is suspicious anyway and is asking me directly, I might as well tell him the truth.

19. Which of the following would you most like to study?
1. Centaurs
2. Goblins
3. Merpeople
4. Ghosts
5. Vampires
6. Werevoles
7. Trolls

Another question where I can choose multiple answers. I'm going with ghosts because I'd like to know more about the spirit/soul and what happens after you die, and ghosts would be the closest to having any sort of answer to those things.
I just realized #6 says werevoles. People turning into voles, ahaha, alright.

20. A troll stops you and your group at a bridge and demands one of you fight him before you can pass.
1. Draw straws to see who fights him.
2. Volunteer to fight him yourself.
3. Try and trick the troll into letting you all pass without fighting him.
4. Plan for all of you to fight the troll without telling him.

Don't want to fight him. Trolls are big and strong and could squash us all. Trolls in Harry Potter are supposed to be dumb anyway, we could totally trick him.

21. What is the first thing you'd explore in a magical garden?
1. The silver leafed tree bearing golden apples
2. The fat red toadstools that appear to be talking to each other
3. The bubbling pool, in the depths of which something luminous is swirling
4. The statue of an old wizard with a strangely twinkling eye

I want to know what's in the pool!

22. Which of the following would you consider the scariest nightmare?
1. Waking up one day and none of you friends and family remember you
2. Talking in a silly voice so no one could understand you and everyone laughing at you
3. Being on top of a cliff with no hand or footholds
4. Being in a windowless, dark room with an eye looking through the keyhole

#1 and #2 would be terrible and distressing but they're kind of normal dream scenarios, not exactly what makes a scary nightmare. #3 would be scary but it's the type of dream that either progresses to something else entirely or I wake up with a start and later forget about it. #4 however, is creepy. Whose eye is it, and why are they watching me? Is there something else in the room with me, or am I alone in there, just me and that eye? It's dark so it's hard to tell. And it sounds like there is no way to get out of that room either, meaning I'm trapped. All of these things make for a pretty scary dream.

23. Late at night, walking alone down the street, you hear a peculiar cry that you believe to have a magical source. Do you:
1 Proceed with caution, keeping one hand on your concealed wand and an eye out for any disturbance?
2 Draw your wand and try to discover the source of the noise?
3 Draw your wand and stand your ground?
4 Withdraw into the shadows to await developments, while mentally reviewing the most appropriate defensive and offensive spells, should trouble occur?
5. Approach the source with a loud battle cry,
6. Hex first and ask questions later.

I'm kind of paranoid when it comes to walking alone at night, so I can definitely see myself doing either this or #1.

24. Which do you prefer?
1. Moon
2. Stars

There are so many of them and they remind me of how huge the universe is. Sure I like the moon, but it's just one object, revolving around our little world. Stars are everything else. Also, they're very pretty when it's a clear sky.

25. Which do you prefer?
1. River
2. Forest

I like water and there might be fish in the river! I actually like both, but rivers just a bit more.

26. Which do you prefer?
1. Dawn
2. Dusk

I used to like dusk because I'm a night person, but now I like dawn because it's nice when after a long night, everybody's still asleep but you get to watch the sun come up and the birds start making noise.

27. Which piece would you choose while playing chess?
1. Black
2. White

I think this all comes down to if I want to go first or not. Occasionally I like going first because it makes me feel like I get an extra move, but most of the time I like letting my opponent make the first move so I can counter it, or get to know their strategy earlier or whatever. I don't think it makes much of a difference though.

28. You arrive at a fork in the road. Not knowing what lies down either way, do you go…
1. Right
2. Left

Oh jeez, this question. No real reason for this, other than because I'm right-handed so I instinctively pick right most of the time, and I want to switch things up.
