In episode thirteen, which is actually episode five, Haruhi gives insight as to why she is the way she is. I transcribed it for my own use but I also find it rather interesting. So, yes . . . this is taken from A.F.K.'s sub, btw. And it's kind of long, but not too long.

( Say, have you ever realized how insignificant your existence is on this planet? I have. It's something I'll never forget. )

...y'know, someday River needs to meet Haruhi. Cause...she's neat. And having existential crises at the age of ten. Yeah. And I think Kaylee would bore her to tears.
