I'm reviewing for several conferences this year. One of the PCs of one of the papers I am reviewing sent a message asking for us to respond to a review response that started "Gentlemen,". I find this incredibly annoying. We can see each others names at this point. It's not like he is addressing a group of faceless reviewers. Additionally, even ( Read more... )

It IS a big deal, a big annoying deal. It's not like he's using terms like "mankind".

Personally I would sign any responding messages with a (a Lady) after my name or something. Maybe he didn't even realize what he was writing but he would after seeing how silly it is to write anything gender-specific.

Etiquette dictates that we address a group as "gentlemen" (regardless of group members' genders) when informing that group of our acquisition of their base. Usage example:
CATS: How are you gentlemen !!
CATS: All your base are belong to us.

However, if this dude did not have your base, then saying "gentlemen" sure makes him seem like he forgets that women could be (ARE!) in his field. Either that or he's just awkward with the English language.
