what was I thinking?

Another CCD class done. Survived, barely. I think they gave me the seven most hyper-active kids in the entire church. It's so hard to get through the lesson because one boy in particular is extremely disruptive. He doesn't want to do any of the activities and he won't sit still during the lesson or be quiet during prayer time. He runs and ( Read more... )

I had to laugh at your vivid description of the disruptive class. I'm sorry, but it DID sound funny. Maybe bring in some candy to class? Then if you do a Q & A or if a child does or says something right, they get a piece of candy? Not sure how that will play with their hyperness, but it might help to get them to listen.

I've never taught small children, so I don't have much experience in that... What did your teachers do when you were that age that made you and the class calm down? If candy doesn't work, maybe stickers? What do kids like? Kids love voices. Maybe imitating different voices of the bible or the readings?

I would try to alternate the lesson stuff with game stuff. Let them know that if they get through the lesson quitely and pay attention that they can play a game. If everyone gets through then they play the game. If not, then let them know why and offer them the chance to play after the next lesson. Are the lessons short? If not try to speed through them to allow more "play time". Some game suggestions are the hokie pokie, duck duck goose, do some silly streches before class, 7-up (I would save that till the end of class).

For the entertainer in your class, he needs more attention. Try taking him aside before class starts and ask him if he will be your special helper. Let him pass out the papers or supplies, hand out snack and so on. Maybe if you give him little tasks it would help him. Especially if he does not have to be in his seat.

Good Luck,
Torie
