Before Sooyoung's audition to Girls' Generation, she made a brief debut in Japan as a singer in the group called Route φ. She first debuted with Marina Takahashi with the song "Start". While in Japan, she became close friends with BoA and Sunday from The Grace as they too were working in Japan as singers at the time. She was previously a DJ of ChunJi along with Sungmin of Super Junior. She was soon replaced by Sunny due to schedule conflicts. Sooyoung also played a part in the sitcom Unstoppable Marriage alongside Yuri.
Sooyoung is universally accepted as awesome. Let us examine why, shall we?
WAY before I got into Soshi, I knew of Sooyoung because people who weren't fans or didn't really know Soshi thought she was awesome. I watched their Kissing You MV first because of Donghae, and I thought she was gorgeous. And you know what? Sooyoung is always insanely gorgeous. Check her out pre-debut. You'll also notice the endless legs. She's a natural model. Really into fashion, too; on Factory Girls, she said that if hadn't been an entertainer, she would've wanted to be a fashion editor. Always effortlessly stylish, this chick.
Even though I knew of her first, I didn't have any particular interest in her until just a month or two ago; being gorgeous is all very well, but there was no appeal in personality. Now, I ask myself - WTF was wrong with you?. She's awesome. If not for leader, she'd probably be the dorkiest member. She's a natural model, yet not aloof or unrelatable in any way. She's just.. always doing or saying something interesting. I mean, her talent is being a Home Shopping channel host. How many people do you know who pronounce that as their talent? You need to watch those with subs; in another ep of Star Golden Bell, she was 'selling' some of the male guests. Pimping SooYoung is sortof hard~ I heard a fan say this once: she's just Sooyoung. With the other girls, I had my nice neat sections, but Sooyoung is just comprised of her own Sooyoungisms.
Okay, let's order this. Taeyeon may outdork her, but Sooyoung has Taeyeon beat in the food stakes. Meet Soshi's resident Shikshin, aka food goddess. She's always eating; and look at that figure!. She also said she's trying to escape from the Shikshin image, though. In a recent radio interview, ChinChin I believe, the girls said she's one of those people who says 'No, I don't want any food, I'm not hungry', and they bring back some food and she eats it all! You'd think, being so gorgeous and tall and thin despite being an incorrigible foodie, she's be easy to hate on account of being so perfect, right? You wish. And why? Dork, dork, dork. She's just natural and unafraid to be her dorky, awesome self.
I would like to devote a section to her gangstah-ness. She's badass. You can see her in a triad, can't you? Plus she admitted to watching adult films. ^^ See what I mean now? She's just Sooyoung. This is one of my favourite Sooyoung clips, from those ever-informative radio shows - they talk about how strong-willed she is, and she herself mentions that she gets really worked up and is very vocal when she thinks something isn't right. You can see this plainly in ep9 of Factory Girl; they're helping this girl Nayoung propose to her boyfriend before he goes off for military duty and when it appears he's rejecting her and walking off without even listening, she gets really angry and speaks out first. Even though it's filming, she calls him out on it right away. <3 As they say in that clip up there, she's actually very tenderhearted. When it turns out it's all okay during the Nayoung ep, she cries, as she does at the end of FG, when she's saying how grateful she is and how much she's learned.
What really made me fall in love with her were the 2 Factory Girl eps where they went to New York; Sooyoung lived in Japan and debuted there first, so she's fluent in Japanese, but her English is not so strong. She said she was constantly frustrated by her lack of ability to communicate and understand. However, that did not stop her from having this HILARIOUS conversation with a cab driver. This is where she infamously says her "I like black man, yo. I like Will Smith". She likes Will Smith! ♥ When they first arrive in New York, she says a guy at the airport staff asked her what she did, and she said she was a singer, so he was all "Britney Spears?", and she said she was in a group and he said "Pussycat Dolls?"; and then he looked at her, ah, un-asseted figure. ^^ But he said she was pretty. They also visited a VOS member; since she fangirls the crap out of them, this was so freaking cute. Basically, Factory Girl = Sooyoung win.
Sooyoung is also one of the group's pretty active actresses. She was on daily drama Unstoppable Marriage with Yuri; I've only seen the special ep where all the girls cameo-d, but basically the 2 crush on FT Island's Jaejin. Not exactly a challenging role, but from the few cuts I've watched, she's not bad at all. She was also recently in Soonjung Manhwa (play Spot the Star), playing a friend of one of the main characters, Lee Yeon Hee.
As part of Soshi, she doesn't often get many solo parts, because she's not that strong of a singer; she doesn't usually leave much of an impression on stage. However, she can sing. She has problems with holding notes, and can go a bit flat, but she definitely isn't a bad singer, either, and has improved a lot from before, so I'm sure she'll continue to do so. Also, I need to add the Soshi perf covering Shinhwa's T.O.P, because of Sooyoung's sexy shoulder thing. ^^
The other thing to know about Shikshin is that I'm pimping the group's pimp. She loves on everybody. It's not restricted to the group members either, look at her stealing a Wondergirl. Nobody is safe!.
And we come to Chunji! She hosted this radio show with SuJu's Sungmin. Aren't they adorable? This was WAY before my time; she was replaced by Sunny, and both MinYoung and MinSun have their avid fans. I've seen some clips floating around, and they seem pretty close and adorable. Oh, this one is hilariou - LOL, Sungmin! I love here how he forces her to get up so she can show him the steps. He follows so attentively! *glomp* Hem, excuse me while I absorb all the awesome. I wish I was around during the Minyoung days~ Cute Minyoung fanvid - read the uploader's comments on the side, too! So. Cute.
