I started mine yesterday with 1300 words, and I THINK I can get to at least the 7000 mark if I work diligently. If I don't, well, then it'll just be a non-bigbang story.
Anyway, I hope you're feeling better!
ETA: The Stephen King movie sounds fascinating. I started reading his books when I was about ten, mainly because the grown-up books in my house were almost all either Stephen King or my mom's c. 1970 nursing textbooks. I agree that some of his best work was when he stepped away from the standard horror. I mean, The Body/Stand By Me? YES. I don't remember "The Last Rung on the Ladder," but I probably did read it if it's one of his older stories. I haven't read very much of his more recent stuff, but I think I read more or less everything he published through about 1996.

And, ahhhh! I love Stephen King so much, and yes, The Body/Stand By Me is full of win. "The Last Rung On The Ladder" was a tiny little story riiight at the end of "Night Shift", which…may have been his second book after "Carrie"? It is one of his first, anyhow. It's pretty forgettable in the context of his entire body of work, but it spoke to me as a kid and still speaks to me now. *.*

Stephen King! I love Stephen King! But I haven't read that story -- actually, I haven't read very many of his shorter works, though I've read most of his novels. I agree with you that his non-horror stuff is better ... I think his biggest strength as an author is that he's so good at people, and it tends to shine more brightly when he's not also focused on, say, giant spiders or rabid dogs. *g* But I actually think he's ... okay, it sounds completely ridiculous to say that he's underrated as a writer when he's rolling in truckloads of cash for his writing, but I honestly think he's underrated as a serious writer, and possibly even underrates himself. I think he writes absolutely brilliantly a lot of the time, and I admire the skill and dedication with which he approaches writing (and his graceful attitude ( ... )
