My parents used to give us a ton of presents from themselves and from Santa Claus, but when I have kids I'm going to give them one present from Santa and it will be the best present on their list. I always loved it, and we still do it at my house. It's just fun to believe in magic, even though you know it isn't real.
the point though is that santa isnt real and the concept is part of and stems from the attitudes and actions of the parents that cause kids to be spoiled. the thing that is bothersome and troubling about the concept isnt the idea of believing in magic and giving gifts because of the love we feel for others without any expectation of return, which is the original idea of santa and a very good thing. the thing that is bad about santa, and i think what cody is talking about here, is that that wholesome, healthy concept has been replaced with pure materialism and the idea that objects and "stuff" is the most important thing in the world. it definitely is at christmas these days, and since we tell kids christmas is such a great and wonderful thing, we're sending a very bad message. so yeah it totally is the parents fault, not santas, but as santa is a concept taught BY parents, in fact created in their kids mind by society at large and then tempered and refined by parents, he's kinda part of the problem too
