Well, I got rejected by Oxford. I wasn't really surprised; because I was sort-of expecting it, I didn't get nearly as upset as I thought I'd be. It really helped that I've been zipping emails back and forth with various professors at Sheffield; they've completely changed my degree program so I can take any philology courses that I want, even ( Read more... )

I'm sorry to hear that and congratulations all at once!

p.s. The word "philology" makes me giggle. This could be linked to the fact I wrote my Neitzche paper while consuming an entire box of Oreos...

p.p.s. Victorian Medievalism sounds like an awesome class. Do tell me how it goes if you take it :).

Thanks Dragan. Philology is awesome--so are Oreos, I was just eating Double-Stuff myself. And the Victorian Medievalism is actually the course I want to take the least. Not because it sounds uninteresting, but because it's not necessarily directly linked to what I want to do. I've done some research into the literature that demonstrates the changing of the language (Beowulf, Chaucer, Shakespeare), but I have to learn more about the actual linguistics of the shifts. Once I learn Old, Middle, and Early Modern English, then I can go on to do primary source work for my doctorate. But yeah, I had to pick another class and this one seemed like the best of the options. Especially since philology was really started during the Victorian era, and the way they thought about myth totally changed. It'll be cool, either way. But I'll definitely let you know about it.

Thank you, thank you. And probably. I thought I wanted to take a few years off from school before I went to get my MA, but all this year did for me is waste a year I could have been using to get the damn degree. Oh well, at least I'm motivated to never leave school again. You should come visit me and Shannon in Sheffield.

We're applying now for either a house or a one bedroom/studio apartment in Sheffield, either in the student-only Endcliffe Village or in the city center. That or we'll be in a more Pibly-style place, so either way we can definitely arrange some mooch-space.

Sorry about getting rejected, but I'm glad that your future as a professional WASP is still rosy. I'm going to call your house now.

I'm not home yet, I'll be home around 2-2:30, but I have to work from 4-6 and get something from the homebrew store first. If you want to come over after that, that's cool, or tomorrow, or whatever.

As you are no doubt aware, that was fruitless.
